How often do you hear people say that? I just want to lose a pound, so how many calories do I need to burn to lose that tiny pound?
Well when you go online you’ll found a wealth of information and most of the time it is totally different from one person to another.
I found two different pieces of information online.
#1 – The Calorie Counter
According to my statistics:
This I found to be a load of rubbish as when I average 1600 calories a week I will maintain rather than lose weight and a 1100 calorie limit will probably result in me losing about ½ pound a week.
#2 – 3500 Calories = 1 Pound Of Fat
The famous argument is that 3500 calories = a pound of fat. Therefore if you burn an extra 3500 calories then you’ll lose a pound in fat. The same goes for your diet, if you drop 3500 calories per week in your diet then the same thing applies.
For example if you reduced your calories from 1600 a day to 1100 a day then you will soon crack it, but it can also be down to physics and how fast you burn calories.
It’s actually harder to reduce 3500 calories than it is to eat them. For example here is an example of how 3500 calories look like:
I have decided to out option #2 to the test. This then brings my calories to a maximum of 1000 a day because over the last week (prior to doing this) I was averaging 1500 a day, so it will be interesting to see how many calories it works out at.
Today I have lots of food. This then means that because I want to maximise myself to 1000 calories a day, that later in the week I will need to make up for it. I see a lot of exercise towards the end of the week!!!!!
For breakfast and for a meal in the evening I have Weetabix. A firm favourite of mine and I had it in the evening as I couldn’t think of anything else I would rather have!!!!
For lunch it is chicken with rice and carrots. A fairly healthy lunch and finished off with some chocolate.
Today we have pate on toast for supper (well Dominic makes the best ever homemade pate so who am I to argue?). Backtrack to breakfast and it is Weetabix with some skimmed milk and Spaghetti Bolognese for lunch.
None of these are particularly low in calories so I need to look at how I am going tail these calories back.
Hello day 3 and I have some tapas biscuits with homemade pate on for breakfast, then chicken with rice, vegetables and sauce for lunch.
Then in the evening I have lots of pate on toast that I seriously shouldn’t be having this week! They say that white bread is the devil, but lots of wholemeal bread with loads of butter and homemade pate can’t be that better for you – can it?
I vow not to get Dominic pate out of the freezer for ages, because unless I have his pate I never have any bread binges. Bread doesn’t really do anything special to me (like it often does with other people) but add a favourite topping and I am super sold on it!
I am also aware that its day 3 and this is my first lot of exercise for the week which is rather scary. Scary because to be able to stick with this weeks challenge, after calories burned I am on a 7000 weekly limit.
And as of right now I am already on 3187. So I have four days left to have less than 1900 calories. Now that is scary – maybe time to get back on the 5:2???????
It is day 4 and at the half way point and I am staring at the calories I have consumed already. By midway through day 4 I have had Weetabix for breakfast and then for lunch a Paleo adapted version of my vegetable bake. I am always looking for new ways to make my unhealthy meals healthy and I think I found a new gem.
Cauliflower sauce made with boiled cauliflower blended with some nice herbs and spices and a dash of coconut milk. Tastes amazing and works out at less than 50 calories a serving. Add to these lots of fresh vegetables and you have a fantastic dish.
Then in the evening I had some more Weetabix as it’s a crazy addiction of mine and I just love it.
Hello day 5 and after what you’ve read that I get up to throughout day 5 and you’ll see how I have clawed back some of my calories.
Calories wise I have gone through 1300 in food. Way above my 1000 a day limit but just wait……I had Weetabix for breakfast then for lunch I made a vegetable stir fry.
I am not sure Dominic was a fan though, his comments over his lunch was along the lines of “is there any fat in this?” “This is rather healthy” “where is the meat?” but because we had chicken fajitas in the evening it was a great way to have a healthy lunch and also because we had run out of bread!
The chicken fajitas where very nice and I realised how much I miss them and should have them more often. I also had a very helpful Kyle helping me with dinner which was fantastic.
Now I ate 1300 calories but I needed to burn a lot to level out. Well I was finished earlier than planned with housework and jumped onto the Wii and after dusting it off got the Zumba on. It was actually the first time I have ever done an hour at once. I used to be way too unfit and could only ever manage 20 minutes, so it was nice to be doing the beginner section over and over again without feeling exhausted.
Then in the afternoon and with you burning more calories when you exercise in the heat I headed down to our local park. After doing a mixture of jogging and walking and time on the exercise bike I was ready for home!
Even after what I had eaten I still managed to burn nearly 1000 calories via exercise today bringing my calorie count right down!
It is now day 6 and I am getting close to my goal. In fact crunching some numbers and I think I might even come under 7000 for the week.
Now that is rather unexpected that is for sure. Though we are having lasagne this evening so that number might be a bit of a worry!
We had out (me, Kyle, baby Sofia and our puppy Demon) for a good walk in the valleys. They are absolutely beautiful and if you would like to read about when we last did a challenge in them then you can read about it here.
What’s different since last time is Sofia. We didn’t bring her last time and she is on me in the baby carrier and it feels like she weighs a tonne. In fact she is really petite for her 7 months and its probably about 17 pounds of baby, but because she is all in one place and because of what I would weigh if I added her weight to mine its like me being obese again.
I feel it quite a lot and find myself out of breath quicker and wondering how I ever coped doing exercise when I was obese.
I am also fascinated with the difference in calories burned. I have burned 843 (with Sofia as my weights) in just over two hours. Where as Kyle how has the perfect body and is walking the dog burns just under 500.
That has to be the downside of being slim and I miss the calories burned as a super fatty!
For lunch (missed breakfast due to my country walk!) I have Weetabix with some skimmed milk and a banana.
Then in the evening we have a lasagne with some salad. What can I say about lasagne other than to say I love it! It is gone as quick as you can blink though.
So today was the day that I was doing lots of exercise for. We are going out to a barbeque and as it is also my last day of carbs for a very long time, I want a big blow out.
I can’t resist barbeque food that is for sure and so I do an hour on the Wii with some Zumba before we go, then do the bits and pieces that we plan to take and then we head off.
They have an outdoor pool so I manage to get 50 lengths in before I eat which means that as I start eating I am on negative calories which is a true bonus!!!!
I am actually really good and turn down a couple of things. Then the dessert trays come around and I can’t resist them. There are loads to choose from and I am delighted with all the lovely food.
And it’s the perfect end to the perfect week.
Now I counted my calories and they came to 8247.50 for the week. Then I counted them after calories I had burned and it came to 5029.50. This meant that I had halved what I had the previous week.
So hopefully this meant a good weight loss/fat burner and then I jumped on the scales……and I have just lost 0.1 kilos.
In other words 220g….talk about depressing and enough to make you want to eat a box of chocolates to yourself.
But I am also on a period and this often adds to a big weight gain for me for a week of the month, so it will be interesting to see in a week’s time how much I weigh.
I also find that my stomach feels slimmer though so maybe I have lost a couple of centimetres rather than actual weight. Another thought is that because I have increased my exercise I am gaining muscle rather than losing actual weight.
It is now getting rather hot here in Portugal so it would be interesting to see how much weight is lost with a little less calories and a lack of exercise.
Now watch the video
I have put together a video of how things have gone this week so that you can watch my diary and see what it was like in real time.
I hope you enjoy it!
So I did the experiment over a 7 day period and then at the beginning of day 8 I weighed myself. As you know from above this resulted in a 0.1 kilo weight loss. And I couldn’t understand why and then it got me thinking that I was too impatient and I should have waited until the calories had chance to adjust on my body.
Therefore I weighed myself again three days later, only to discover that I had regained my 0.1kilo. Talk about harsh and upsetting!!! But I decided to give it one last chance and weighed myself a final time 7 days after finishing the experiment and I had lost 2 kilos. Yes 4.5 pounds was gone from me and I realised that I often lack patience and then get disappointed when I don’t see results.
So with this in mind, never mind losing a pound, I lost four and a half!!!!
How has it gone for you?
Have you tried the reasoning behind a 3500 calories drop and how much weight you can lose from it? Let me know in the comments below.
