We are on the verge of moving house. Well we chose the house back in August but house buying and mortgages are a very slow process in Portugal. But right now as we are about to complete and get the keys within the next couple of weeks, time is spent on planning my new kitchen.
As a weight loss blogger, everything revolves around food. Fresh food to cook, chocolate to store in the kitchen and best of all, the gadgets that make up a kitchen.
My mum asked me recently if I was kitchen gadget obsessed because I had bought a new soup machine. But the truth is – I absolutely love cooking and anything that makes life easier and that I can use regularly is perfect for us.
My mum would have loads of gadgets and then never use them and they would just gather dust in the cupboard and would soon be forgotten about. Whereas we have a few machines and they get used all the time.
We have a Soup Machine, AirFryer, Slow Cooker, Casserole Dish, Food Processor, Hand Mixer and Food Heaters.
The Soup Machine is our latest investment and it also makes an excellent steamer for lunches and I can’t believe how much I actually enjoy soup. I have also started using it for making my homemade tomato sauce (you can download it here).
The Airfryer has so many uses I could never list them all. But for us it’s the tasty homemade chips that we consume most days because we are carb addicts! They also are great for cooking meatballs in 🙂
The Slow Cooker was something I first discovered a good 15 years ago and I fell in love with the simplicity of homemade cooking that could be just left to its own devices. I can put on pulled pork in the morning and know that come mid afternoon I have a fantastic joint in front of me.
My casserole dish has become a lot more popular in our kitchen than I ever thought it would. I wanted something where I could make one pot dishes and not have to worry about lots of pots and be able to then put them in the oven. We must use them at least twice a week and the food in them is very much like what grandma cooks!
My Food Processor stays in a dark cupboard and often only comes out when we’re desperate. Sounds daft but when you factor in how long they take to get clean and for how quick you use them, it always seems like such an effort! Someone needs to invent the self clean food processor!
Our Hand Mixer has just been replaced after having one for more than a decade. Well actually, it was probably older than that as it was my mums for many years and it finally broke on us. We use it for quickly whizzing things up, especially puddings and for making sauces with.
Food Heaters are a fantastic asset to a kitchen and can come in very handy especially when you’re having a dinner party or are having a nice supper as a family. We use them when we are doing tapas because quite often, not everything is ready at once! We are having Chicken Fajitas this weekend and they will be perfect for keeping them warm while we eat slowly.
You’ll notice from that list that we don’t have a microwave and we haven’t actually had one for over seven years and we don’t miss it at all. Once we started cooking from scratch it only ever seemed to get used for heating up a can of beans and that was it. So when we moved to Portugal and sold our microwave, the plan was that it would never get replaced. And it never has been.
Kyle keeps asking if when we move whether or not we’ll get one and I point out that it’s a waste of money as it would never get used. Though, I think he wants one because his friends have one. But I have found that the Air Fryer makes an excellent source for heating things up. Plus in our Grandparents day it was a case of doing it the old fashioned way and simply using a pan to heat it up!
Plus, if you have a microwave you’re more likely to return to your bad old ways and get the ready meals from the supermarket.
So over to you, what kitchen gadgets do you have?
