A couple of days ago I watched a very disturbing TV show on Channel 5 on Demand. It was about the benefits system in England and how many people are simply too fat to work.
I have been living outside of England for so long that I often forget about how bad obesity has become in England. Portugal has a fair few people with what I would call “beer bellies” but nothing is really that bad and no one is so bad that they need to quit work because they can’t get about.
I would probably get a real shock if I came to England and walked around a local market with 60% now being obese.
I have only ever seen people like this once in a close up way, that was three years ago when we were on holiday at Disney World when we saw American’s using mobility scooters just to get around because they were too fat to walk.
What scares me the most is how close we could have been to being in their boat with all the weight we had gained and if we hadn’t done something about it who knows where we would have been?
At our worst we had a BMI of 34 & 40 putting us directly into the obesity category. Yet we never had a problem getting about so we don’t know why people couldn’t!
The couple in the television show came across as extremely lazy and of course they couldn’t do a physical job, but if they could sit on the sofa on their laptops they could easily complete office work or similar.
This actually reminds me of what I used to hate so much about England and that was the fact that people didn’t seem to want to make an effort and enjoyed the benefit system so much.
I wonder if in England it is considered as a career move. After all the couple featured in the programme Stephen Beer & Michelle Coombe earn £20,000 a year to sit on their bottoms all day and eat more and more fatty and sugary food. I dread to think if they carry on how much more they will end up weighing.
It also scares me when you see a very obese 18 year old woman that has to be checked during the night just to make sure that her fat doesn’t suffocate her. When I think of how depressing it is to be a couple of stone over weight it puts things in proportion.
I also admit as a family to having a half a stone weight gain over Christmas due to over indulging but we don’t do this on a regular basis, we know that its bad for you and if we do this every week that we would be the size of a house!
As a person that is considered to be too fat to work in the UK you’re entitled to lots of benefits including disability living allowance because right now its considered to be a disability in the same way that being blind, being in a wheelchair or even suffering from cancer does. Yet if you lose your home due to losing your job you are told that you created the problem yourself so you must not get anything.
There really doesn’t seem any justice there does there? After all isn’t overeating something that you have directly caused?
I am just super glad that I am not a UK tax payer anymore as it is shameful to be paying for other people to get super fat or to maintain their Doner Kebabs!
What do you think?
