Like the title asks can Dad’s gain weight after pregnancy too?
Well of course they can! And even though the focus is always on mum’s gaining weight after pregnancy (as we recently mentioned on the blog) the same circumstances can affect the dad just as much!!!
For example the biggest killer ever for causing weight gain is a lack of sleep and having a new baby is a prime example. Apart from over the last week or so when our daughter Sofia has started to sleep for six hours (though she doesn’t do this every night!) I have not wanted to exercise because my body isn’t capable and chocolate and fatty foods have been my drug of choice.
I am going to take you through how I have felt food wise through my wife’s pregnancy and how men like me who have a weight issue can start to gain weight again especially when baby comes home and routine goes out of the window!
So during pregnancy women usually eat more because they need to for the first few weeks but some even use the pregnancy as an excuse to over eat and gain even more weight than blame it on the baby.
Same can be said for the father!!!
With me the hardest thing during the pregnancy was trying to deal with my wife’s cravings even though they were not too bad when she wanted ice-cream she had to have it so whilst you are buying some for her why not get some for the dad as well?
This is very hard to not buy yourself some, so of course I did get myself some and really enjoyed it when maybe I shouldn’t. But all through the pregnancy I was still running right up to her being born so I was burning calories I was eating but just not enough to be able to lose weight.
So when you look at my chart when she was getting close to giving birth I virtually stay the same for the whole way.
Here is how my weight went through her pregnancy:
End of trimester #1 = 16 Stone 5 Pounds
End of trimester #2 = 16 Stone 8 Pounds
End of trimester #3 = 16 Stone 13 Pounds
As you can see – by the end of the pregnancy I had gained 8 pounds and most of that happened in the final trimester when my wife just wanted to eat fatty and sugary foods. The amount of times I followed her to McDonalds was not good!
So after our little one arrives home even though we already had one all be it a 13 years old you sort of forget what looking after a little one entails. And I forgot the impact a lack of sleep has on my body.
We all can handle the odd night here and there where you just have a bad night’s sleep but a consistent lack of sleep over 7 weeks is something else. I have not exercised over this time so I am really missing that and the sleep really is not good for the fact of my sweet and fat cravings.
I have known this is an issue and it would affect me but when I need to listen to my hypnosis CD I just fall asleep and if you have read my diary inputs I need to stay awake for it to work for me so things are not going well in the weight loss department.
I have put on a few kilos over the Christmas period and after but now I am trying to get things sorted so I can again start to lose the weight I need to and continue to my weight loss goal. I am determined to not let this set back make me gain all the weight I have lost over the past couple of years.
I hear you say sleep in another room but is this really fair? Sam does the going in bit and I do the going out bit so we share the responsibility of the little one which I think is fair and anyway as I write this post the little one has just done a full 7 hour sleep for the first time so things are looking up!
The thing is the hypnosis CD really helps me deal with a lot of my food issues and with stress. I was very stressed with Sam having another baby because of her weight problems and then with us trying to buy a house in a foreign country it really got to me.
So with not doing the hypnosis properly and staying awake these stresses started to affect me and the way I was handling the stress. Also the running helps a lot with stress because it gives you something to focus on.
So now I am starting to try and fit in my CD during the day a bit more when the little one is sleeping so that I am relaxed and ready to again start losing weight and becoming a healthier father and hopefully getting back on track.
Even though with weight gain after pregnancy (was about another 3 pounds) in the old days I would have put on a couple of stone so I feel better knowing that it was less than a stone and before I know it I will be back to where I was!
