I am in love with the relationship that our bodies have with protein. Unlike with carbs when we just feel bloated and horrible, protein gives us this fantastic energy boost, where we feel like we could achieve anything. Go to the gym, work a 12 hour shift or even just go out for a drink or twenty!
I love experimenting with my body and the science behind weight loss and weight gain. Last time I experimented with protein I looked at how little snacking we all do when we have a high protein diet. There is a less urge to snack and this results in us consuming less calories and losing weight without a diet.
This time I want to look at how much weight can be lost, if we have a moderately high protein diet and how little your body eats if we simply stop eating the moment we feel full. I have touched on stopping being greedy and eating until we are full before (you can read my eat less post here) and I find it really interesting how much we overeat on a daily basis because our body is so used to it.
Today we are up super early because we are doing a car boot and I am sure there should be some sort of law against getting up at 6am on a weekend.
Because of the early start breakfast = an apple on the go.
Lunch is a nice bowl of cereal with skimmed milk, then an extra glass of skimmed milk to wash it down with. Skimmed milk has a good protein count due to it being fat free and is excellent for helping you lose weight.
Though, because I am no saint I have the rest of my mothers’ day chocolate cake that my little darlings made for me. And its super delicious.
In the evening we have veggie bake (and to you non-Brits this is fresh seasonal vegetables with a cheese sauce on top) not exactly the healthiest thing in the world but I love them.
Today it is Sunday and as such I very rarely have breakfast on a Sunday. For one, by the time I have finished lazing around it is often 10am and before you know it lunch time is upon us.
Today I have a glass of milk late morning (for my protein kick) and then for lunch we have a barbeque and for the first time ever I don’t over cater for lunch and we all feel satisfied yet not stuffed.
In the evening (because they not cooked on time!) we have some spare ribs for our supper and they are super yummy. There is something magical about spare ribs the way the meat falls off the bone and tastes delicious.
Of course the day is not complete without some chocolate and I have a strip of milk chocolate!!!!
Hello day 3 and I am amazed by how protein as a main part of my meals can result in me eating less. Even with adding some skimmed milk to your diet can make a big difference.
For breakfast I have an apple and then for lunch it is one of my favourites “courgette fritters”. I absolutely love these and they have lots of egg in them and are therefore fantastic for a protein kick!
In the evening we have tapas and it goes down a treat with the fresh bread that we’ve just bought from the bread man.
It is day 4 and I am rather enjoying this week and didn’t realise until lately how much I enjoy an extra bit of protein in my diet.
I even make it out for a power walk with Sofia in the baby carrier and its amazing how good it feels to be exercising, especially knowing how many extra calories I am burning with carrying a 6.5 kilo baby at the same time!
We are also super healthy today (apart from our love for some butter) with us having broccoli soup with fresh bread for lunch and jacket potatoes with tuna in the evening.
It is day 5 today and I am all geared up to go swimming later today. Sofia starts her mother and baby swimming sessions and I also plan to get back into it and do some lengths at the same time.
For breakfast I have an apple, then for lunch it is salmon with duck rice and some green peppers. Duck rice is probably unusual to the masses but is very popular in Portugal and is the Portuguese take on their own egg fried rice. Just without the eggs and lots of thinly sliced duck.
In the evening (after Sofia has her swimming lesson) we get a takeaway from the supermarket. And share some Piri Piri Chicken (this has to be best option for tasty protein) and have some bread and a few other things with it. Its not too heavy on our stomach which is great considering we are eating after 7pm!
Hello day 6 and breakfast = some special K and some skimmed milk. After doing the laps in the pool last night I feel the urge for something better than an apple for breakfast.
For lunch it is roasted butternut squash, with steak and rice – talk about super yummy and full of goodness at the same time 🙂
In the evening Dominic does me some cheese on toast as I am working late in the office and wow there is nothing better than cheese on toast is there? Especially if there is butter involved as well.
For the final day of the week it is Friday and the one I always look forward to. Dominic finishes work about 8pm and then we all snuggle around the coffee table and have some nice Friday night supper. Tonight I make Chicken Fajitas and potato wedges and it is all super yummy!
I have noticed lately that if I have more skimmed milk I tend to eat less and I am always fascinated by how drinking more protein can help you with your eating habits.
In the end over the week I can’t believe how easy it is to eat less from more protein. I will certainly be making sure that I eat more protein on a regular basis. However I don’t want to eat too much where I put my healthy lifestyle at risk.
It’s a case of finding a good balance and I believe that I have one 🙂
