Food Unwrapped is now back after its Christmas break and there is no better way to kick off after Christmas than with a diet special. And as a television addict I was right there watching it as soon as it was available on 4OD.
The introduction headline got my attention first – it stated that there has been a 74% increase in diet supplements in recent years. I just can’t believe how many people are taking them.
I first took a diet supplement when I was getting ready for my wedding and desperate to shed a few more pounds before the big day. I only ever took one because it made me feel so sick because it was enormous and it never made any kind of difference to my eating habits.
The show covered a lot considering it was on for an hour but here are some of the highlights:
It looked at our interest in energy drinks and what a difference it makes to us. I personally love energy drinks though they are really not very good for me. I did an experiment once and I was amazed by how much further I could jog on the treadmill when I had one, compared to when I didn’t.
The female presenter on the show did an experiment with and without it and it was amazing how much further she could go on an exercise bike.
But when you do the maths it is really not that good – if you think of how many more calories you’re spending on the drink, compared to the extra calories you burn you are better off without them.
I tend to use them more for when I have had a terrible sleep and need to work – but even so I probably don’t have more than three cans a year….if that!
Now this is a major part of our lives and we will often comment how our friends that are slim can eat anything where as you cant. It always feels unfair and you often get jealous over your friends.
It was interesting looking at what people’s metabolism was when they were resting compared to when they were active. I have always considered myself to having a terrible metabolism and have never had it tested so I am sure it would be interesting if I did.
For example over Christmas I ate less chocolate than Dominic and he gained less weight than me! Something he is still laughing at me over! Though I think that is partly due to the fact that I eat less chocolate in general so I have had a bigger Christmas calorie increase than him.
But it did bring to light why bigger people lose weight quicker when they first start dieting – this is because they need more calories to get around so a calorie decrease to the same as a normal person would have a huge impact in weight loss.
Maybe that is why it was easier to lose weight when I started when I was obese compared to now!!!!
One tip though – if like me you believe your metabolism is rubbish go and get cold as the show pointed out a bit of cold in the body can do the trick. Though, I don’t have the urge to jump in the cold British sea to improve it!
