You hear the diet name Slimming World and its something that has been around for a number of years that is familiar to many. I first joined a Slimming World group back in the mid 90’s while I was going through a fat teen phase and as my mum was a member it made sense for me to join her.
Well I took to it like a duck to water and had a great time. Though looking back now I often believe that its down to the fact that my mum did all the cooking and planned all my meals and snacks. Also I chose to walk to and from school to help it work quicker so I was clocking 10 miles per week.
But I loved it and it got me thinking about others when they join Slimming World and where to start.
There are of course free food, healthy extras, syns and a whole bunch of other things and like Weight Watchers it can take your brain a while to absorb all the different information.
But I have a much easier way of getting my head around it and I like doing it in these stages. So that you are not throwing yourself in at the deep end and then you can do it bit by bit over several weeks rather than in just one quick go.
How I get started with Slimming World:
With the free foods I have the plan that the majority of the food that I consume on every meal is a free food. Free foods are food and drink on Slimming World that you can consume as much as you like and as long as you don’t add fat or sugar to it, then you can have it on a huge portion scale.
Here are a few ways:
- Chicken with potatoes and vegetables
- Melon boat with loads of prawns
- Spaghetti bolognaise
- Salmon and broccoli (one of my favourite lunches)
- Boiled eggs
- Rice and vegetables
- Jacket potato with beans
- Spanish omelette
And there are of course, many more to choose from. This then leads to the speed food list and basically speed foods are free foods that if you eat these particular foods then you can increase your chance of weight loss. Fantastic if you feel in a rut and want to lose weight quicker.
Here are the Slimming World Speed Foods:
You can also read more about these and how I lost extra weight, just by eating them on this post.
Now I love these and these are where you have a set amount of extra foods that are super good for you. They are not part of your free list but you can have a set amount of them per day. It includes milk, wholemeal bread, certain cereals and a few cheeses. Many people that are really successful at losing weight fast on Slimming World simply ditch these and then enjoy them as part of their Syns.
Personally, I find that there are too many allowances for healthy extras and I never manage to use them all up and if I do, I always feel like I have eaten more than I planned on.
So maybe a few Slimming World members have a point?
If you want to gradually get into Slimming World then to follow the rules of healthy extras simply swap your habits for healthier versions.
- Cornflakes for branflakes
- White bread for wholemeal bread
- Full cream milk for skimmed
- Cheddar cheese for Light Philadelphia
My all time favourite healthy extra is the light soft cheese. Its amazing when you mix it with meat, or use it to make sauces how amazing it ends up tasting. If I could have it with every meal forever then I would 🙂
Now Syns – otherwise known as the bad stuff and eating it in moderation. You’ll find trips out to the curry house, McDonalds, chocolate, wine, butter, oils and a whole range of other things that we all wish we could lose weight by eating but can’t!!!!
It is recommended that you have 5-15 of these a day, though you’ll often find that if you have around the 15 mark, that you’ll really struggle to lose weight and that around 10 is a better level to have.
But its hard work – everything has a different Syn value and this is the hardest thing to get your head around as a Slimming World newbie. But I have an easy option to this.
Go for the bad things in moderation rule instead. If you are going out for an Indian meal then don’t have any Syns for a few days and then choose the healthier option when out. You could have something in a tomato sauce instead of a cream sauce, and then have prawn cocktail for starter instead of the deep fried options. Then swap the wine for sparkling water.
Or look at what you eat now and find a lower calorie version. For example if you always have a bar of Dairy Milk as your daily chocolate fix then swap it for a Curly Wurly. You’d be amazed by how tasty they are and how low in calories they are too.
All in all when you do start your Slimming World journey don’t feel like you have to know it all in a week. I didn’t and its lots of studying and learning and just by doing a few swaps (like I have suggested above) you can kickstart your Slimming World journey.
