I often get told by nutritionists that my carb intake such be at a bare minimum. It causes bloating, makes you feel tired and if you want to be fit and active then you are better off without it!
Well I have always stuck the middle finger up at anyone that has suggested such a thing and never gone more than three days without any carbohydrates. I love bread, I love pasta more and a life without chips or roasties is a life not worth living!
But for this week and for one week only I have decided to go carb free and avoid all the usual products that contain carbohydrates so I am saying goodbye to:
- Diet Drinks
- Dried Fruit
- Biscuits & Cakes
Looking at the list above, your mind is so obsessed with the pasta, rice, potatoes and bread, then forgets about all the other foods that are high in carbs and it feels like the list goes on forever.
There are of course many more foods with carbohydrates in it, but these are the biggest villains and need to be put to rest for a week!
And I will be concentrating more on full fat produce such as cheese and meats with lots of natural fruit and vegetables in my diet instead.
It’s Monday and I didn’t write the above until lunch time when I was so busy and had time to research things, so I have already broken the rules by having a diet drink can. But I know now and will go cold turkey for the rest of the week!
I am also meeting my parents for lunch on Wednesday and its where does the best ever cakes so it is going to be a real struggle to eat there and not want any cake. Oh and they do the best ever rice. I am torturing myself thinking about all these foods and its not even Wednesday yet!
Today I have a green pepper for breakfast as I take the puppy for a walk down the lane, then because I am starving Dominic makes me some egg mayonnaise and it is delicious.
For lunch it is sausages and beans and even though I have just too big sausages I am still rather shocked by the calories in sausages. It is making me feel super fat just thinking about it!
In the evening Dominic makes me a bowl of chopped tomatoes and some fruit salad, the only problem is that the portion size is huge. And WAY TOOOO BIG for me! But I do make a good start on it though!
I love fresh tomatoes and at this time of year they are fantastic chopped on a plate with some seasoning.
Hello day 2 and is it weird that I am not missing carbs one little bit? I actually can go through days where I don’t bother with them at all and right now it doesn’t feel like I am even dieting, let alone going carbohydrate free.
I am out and about today, so in the morning I put on some chicken in a coconut sauce in the slow cooker with some vegetables. Then in the evening I have some tuna and sweetcorn stuffed into a green pepper.
Absolutely delicious and I am feeling super healthy and so energetic.
My parents are in town and this should be called “official get fat day”. We are eating out at my favourite café that sells chocolate cake, duck rice and lots of other things that I shouldn’t be eating. Oh and they also have a bar and it’s so wrong that I am not drinking a Malibu & Coke today!
So after having a green pepper on the way to line my stomach I end up having lemon chicken with salad. Each day they have a couple of different daily specials and today they have pan fried fish or baked lemon chicken. They are both served with chips and rice or rice and salad.
Being a good non-carb eater I have mine with just salad. I am actually rather amazed by my willpower, then surprised when my mum has the same. Then again, she is always on a diet! My dad on the other hand, who could do with losing a couple of stone, opts for his lemon chicken with chips. And wow I don’t think I have seen a chip portion so huge before!!!! And my dad doesn’t quite finish it!
Then we head across the road to the burger bar for a sundae. They normally come with sauce like they do at McDonalds and I opt for mine without the sauce and it is lovely, especially as something cold in the sunshine.
Dominic is actually rather supportive and even with Kyle’s protests avoids the chocolate cake because I can’t have any 🙂
Now that is love….
In the evening it is a little green pepper with some tuna and sweetcorn and it is lovely.
Last week when I was following the Soup Machine Diet I always counting down the days until it was over. Yet with this week I don’t really feel restricted at all. We can all cut bread and pasta out of our diet without it really feeling like it is a big deal. After all, I don’t actually eat that much pasta and bread anyway.
Today I have some hard boiled eggs for breakfast. Not my first choice but because I can’t have cereal or toast and its shopping day and we are out of fresh fruit it means that it’s this or nothing.
For lunch Dominic makes me a lovely large pork burger and does me some sliced tomatoes on the side. Who said you needed a burger bun to enjoy a burger? It was super tasty and I am finding that I am not missing the high carbs that I normally have!
Normally at this point in doing a tried and tested I am thinking about being past the half way point and not having long before I can re-introduce a certain food type, but I am really not feeling like this right now.
In the evening it is an apple and some green pepper stuffed with tuna and sweetcorn. It is delicious and so low in calories at the same time.
Hello day 5! Today is a busy day and I suspect that it’s not going to be the healthiest of days either!
I don’t have any breakfast due to lack of time, then for lunch I make Dominic a cheese and tomato sandwich and I have the same minus the bread and butter = lots of cheese and tomato. Totally yummy and exactly what I fancy!
In the evening we have some tapas = pulled pork, cobb salad, avocado dip, sweet potatoes and a few other bits and pieces.
As the boys tuck into their fresh bread that they have just got from the bread man I am rather happy with the fact that I am not green with envy.
I love pulled pork and sweet potatoes are a fantastic low carb option and taste amazing!
The only thing I do feel is missing at the moment is butternut squash. It is out of season at the moment and they are so small and don’t seem worth buying. But they are fantastic for a potatoes alternative and taste amazing just baked in the oven with some salt and pepper.
Also because a lot of my favourite chocolate and sweet products have been banned I have been craving sugar. Also, I have been without fizzy drinks I have a sudden urge for a sparkling white wine. Thankfully it is just the one because as we all know wine is very bad in the calorie department!
It is day 6 and I make one of my favourite meals – cauliflower rice. Now this is one of those dishes that a lot of people forget about and is my favourite alternative carb free recipe out of all that I have cooked.
You put your cauliflower in the food processor and make into fine breadcrumbs. Then you have a rice alternative and then you would make egg fried rice how you would normally make it and it is a fantastic meal.
We like it with some chicken breast and lots of seasonal vegetables to turn it into a really healthy Saturday night feast.
For the final day of the experiment I have lots of fresh pineapple for lunch, after all is it really that wrong to have one to yourself?
It is super tasty and then in the evening this is followed up with a tasty chicken casserole with lots of fresh vegetables and red wine. I just love a casserole and tinned tomatoes and red wine with a little Philadelphia to give it a creamy texture are perfect together.
Plus you always know you are onto a winner when your kid goes back for seconds!
I have found that overall I have not missed carbs at all. I don’t crave carbs like I do with chocolate, or like I do with ice cream or fast food. What I do find is that it can be sometimes difficult to think of what to make as an alternative because carbs is a food that we tend to have in everything.
You want a sandwich for lunch yet you cant have bread, then for breakfast you think toast, then cereal then porridge and you end up with a fruit salad, just because you can’t think of anything else.
I believe we all live in a carb world and going without carbs can be hard work!
On a weight point of view I end up maintaining, I am happy with this as last week I did the soup machine diet and what I have done is increase my calories so a maintain is fantastic in my mind.
I also felt like this week was also an eyeopener as to what is in carbs as many of us don’t see past the rice, chips and bread when in fact there are a lot of items that are high in carbohydrates.
