As I have previously mentioned I am a huge butter addict and I simply can not resist it. As I mentioned on a one of the biggest healthy eating changes I made to my diet was giving up on margarine after years using it.
This is because margarine is full of chemicals that are not good for you and as long as you eat butter in moderation it is good for you in your diet.
Many people that are obese and talk about what they eat, often talk about having way too much butter and how they will have 4 slices of white toast for breakfast with a lot of butter on it.
Now this of course, is not going to help with you losing weight, but just before writing this I had one slice of wholemeal toast with a little butter and a little jam on it. Now this working out at less than 100 calories is not going to do me any harm and is all about having it in moderation.
I am also a big fan of other similar dairy products and love single cream, creamy milk and coconut milk. All of which I have now and again but they are not a big part of my daily diet. Therefore just because you are on Slimming World and counting Syns don’t feel like you to have watch everything you eat because you don’t – you just have to have them on a limited basis.
For the butter police of you out there that feel we should all cut it out completely – well my argument is that in the old days we all ate butter and cream on a regular basis and back in the 50’s before we all got addicted to processed foods (including margarine) we would all have it on a regular basis.
But I am sure you just want to know about the Syns and how that naughty bit of butter or cream measures up in the grand scheme of weight loss.
Firstly, there are 2 Syns in every 1 teaspoon of butter. Or 10.5 Syns in a 28g portion size. Therefore they are really not as bad as what you would expect. If for example you are cooking a sauce with dinner you will often use 28g but that portion will be spread between four people (on average) meaning that the buttery garlic mushrooms will not be that high if you are making them from scratch compared to if you bought them in a restaurant.
When I make fried onions for on the top of my hotdogs I will use ½ teaspoon of butter (1 Syn) instead of oil and they taste much better and so flavoursome.
Here is how other products compare:
- 1 Tbsp Single Cream = 1.5 Syns
- 1 Tbsp Double Cream = 3.5 Syns
- 1 Tbsp Squirty Cream = 0.25 Syns
- 1 Tbsp Whipped Cream = 3.0 Syns
- 1 Tbsp Coconut Cream = 2.5 Syns
- 1 Tbsp Channel Island Milk = 0.5 Syns
This list just makes me want to reach for the squirty cream and squirt it into a bowl with some Angel Delight. It must have been years since I last had some and at a ¼ of a Syn per level tablespoon it certainly is appealing for someone that wants to eat healthy but still enjoy the creamy puddings.
