How to choose the perfect gym shoes
Subscribed to a new gym membership? It’s time to go shopping; not just for the apparel but also for the right gym shoes. Some people might also deem it necessary to buy one that matches the gym outfit, but that is secondary, isn’t it? In other cases, many people totally ignore the need for having shoes meant for the gym purpose and instead hit the gym wearing their running shoes. However, if you are really serious about your fitness goals and want to have a pleasant and injury-free experience at the gym, it is important to be a little specific. Quite unfortunately, we don’t have categories for shoes that are solely suited for the gym hence finding the perfect pair could be a daunting task.
The first step is to be clear about the activities that you wish to perform at the gym. Everyone has different set of goals to hit the gym. So your focus might vary from weightlifting or cardiovascular machines to other fitness activities.
Depending upon the kind of exercise you do frequently we have specified the categories and the type of shoes that are perfect for each category:
Typically you require low-profile shoes for this purpose. You want something which is firm and ensures a flat grip on the ground. This becomes particularly important if you are lifting heavy weights. Also, these shoes will keep you closer to the ground and keep injuries at bay. Besides, if you figure the right kind of shoes, your workouts become more effective. For a good weightlifting routine, make sure that you go for flat-soled shoes which make you feel grounded and rooted. Steer clear from wearing thick-soled running shoes.
Purpose: Running on the treadmill
It might sound quite lame to get another pair for the treadmill. Quite a valid point. But treadmill decks generally come with a lot of cushioning and having some additional cushioning in your shoe can do you more harm than good. This is bad because this deters your ability to stabilize quickly while you are running on the treadmill. In the worst case, when you cannot stabilize, you might end up getting hurt. If you regularly clock in miles on the treadmill, it is advisable to go for thin, lightweight, and flexible shoes.
Once again you need something that has flat soles without any kind of cushioning. Since the purpose here is to work and strengthen the foot, hence it should feel grounded. You have to use the support of the arch of the foot and make it stronger. So instead of getting support for the arch from your shoes is not a good thing to do. As far as the traditional running shoes are concerned, these are a strict no-no.
Purpose: A combination of everything
It could be a cardio or strength-training workout that you might be planning and this means that you need supportive shoes. For these kinds of exercises where you have to put in a lot of effort such as side shuffling or jumping, you need shoes that offer a good amount of grip and cushioning. You can go for cross-trainers that offer a very light and comfortable experience other than providing you ample support. Other than these qualities, they are quite flexible and stable.
Getting the right fit
It becomes even more important for gym training that you get the right fit. At a fundamental level, the right fit ensures that you don’t suffer from any sort of discomfort such as blisters or pain. A simple way to ensure that you are picking the right size is that there should be some gap between the longest toe and the shoe; allow a ½ inch gap for comfort. The kind of socks that you wear while working out also makes a difference. There is no harm in trying the shoes with the socks of the same thickness that you would actually wear in the gym. Things like these appear quite trivial but you would be better off taking your time for choosing the correct size rather than suffering an injury.
When it comes to buying the gym shoes, it indeed is a costly affair. But we did manage to convince you as to why the right kind of gym shoes are important, didn’t we? There are a plethora of stores online which deliver shoes right at your door step without causing any hassle.
