Welcome to the home kitchen at My Weight Loss Dream. We have always believed that to have successful weight loss, the main focus needs to be lifestyle changes. Changes to your lifestyle that makes you think and feel like a healthy person so that you can enjoy the next chapter in your life.
We have therefore put together a resources page for you, so that not only can you see what we have in our kitchen but what you could have in your own to be able to make that amazing lifestyle change. The emphasis on this page (and many others on our blog) is that cooking fresh is best and cooking with low fat is even better. This is all about enjoying healthy food and discovering that it is rather delicious when you give it a go!!!!
Where would we be without our staple foods? The foods that aid our meals and can turn a boring piece of chicken breast into a master piece that would be worthy of a Masterchef final dish. The way you actually forget what you are eating is actually diet food. Not to mention with it being diet food you don’t have to feel guilty afterwards!!!
These staple foods are what we currently have in our kitchen right now and use them to able to eat fresh seven days a week.
Our fresh food is mainly covered by super speed foods (you can read more about what they are here) and other foods we just can’t live without. We love our fruit and vegetables and other things are always on the menu too like wholemeal bread and fresh milk. We like the idea of eating healthy and enjoying our food.
Also, with living in Portugal prices have always been really cheap on fresh produce and it wasn’t until we moved here that we would buy fresh tropical fruits such as pineapple and mangos.
Here is what we have in the fresh food department:
There was a time when our freezer was full of rubbish. Ready meals, Ben & Jerry’s, pizza, leftover KFC buckets and so on. Now we have very little processed foods in there and it is pretty much full of our leftovers and some fresh meat and fish that we have frozen. I love it when we make a lasagne and the majority of it ends up frozen so that one weeknight when I can’t be bothered to cook I don’t have to. Plus when there was the horse meat scandal earlier this year I knew exactly where my meat came from.
In our kitchen it has been transformed from how it was just a few years ago. We had a deep fat fryer, frying pans, and a few pans for the stove. This is before we got into healthy eating and we educated ourselves about what kitchen gadgets you could use in your kitchen to help with your healthy eating and which ones actually work.
Now our main kitchen accessories is made up of the following 10 items:
Philips Air Fryer – This kitchen gadget is probably one of the best things we have ever bought. Purely because it does what it says, cooks food for a fraction of the fat content you would get in a deep fat fryer. Yes it is not perfect things rarely are nowadays but to help you in your weight loss targets this can not be overlooked.
If you are not convinced think of it like this…..
Imagine if you are on a diet and you decide that for dinner you would have a large jacket potato with a little butter and beans. Previously though you would have opted for chips and beans so you are now improving your diet. Well with our Philips Air Fryer you just use a little fat free spray with your potatoes making chips less calories than the jacket potato.
This is my book is a sure winner!
Food Steamer – Now we were very sceptical about a steamer as everyone we had spoken to about it said the food turns out so bland they have to season it after they had cooked it. This seemed a bit exagerrated so we gave it a go and bought one from Amazon for a really good price, and i will always remember the first time we cooked are vegetables in it. We just could not believe the flavour that was still in the vegetables and all the goodness that came with it. It was one of those shocked food moments that needed to be a OMG moment.
Think about the oragnic food craze and how good organic vegetables tasted. Then imagine the steamer – the same taste but without the huge expense of over priced vegetables. Not to mention great for when you cant be bothered. You simply dump the food in it and then it pings when it is done!
Kitchen Accessories Pack – Now it is important to have one of these. And it is often much cheaper to buy them as a package than individually. Make sure you have a garlic press, wooden spoons, ladels, masher, cheese grater and so on. They all have their use and last for years. We are still using my mum and dads grater that they got when they got married as a wedding present. Then when they upgraded and we were moving in together we took their old set.
I always have them next to me and I forget just how much I use them and how useful they have become.
Oven & Bakeware Pack – It is also a good idea to have a really good oven and bakeware set. For when you are cooking small dishes in the oven, baking some amazing low calorie biscuits and best of all for making your Sunday roast.
We don’t use our oven that much but still use it for quite a few staples. Like heating up vegetables in cheese sauces, fish pie, roast potatoes and jacket potatoes to name a few.
Our pack has lasted a long time and is something that is essential in the kitchen.
Measuring Scales – These are a must for any self respecting dieting person. Without a good set of scales you would be stuck not just for weighing food but finding out how many calories are in everything you eat. We like the digital ones best and find them more accurate than the old put something on the top and watch the arrow move not very efficiently.
Even if you are not on a diet these are just as important. When you cook fresh all the time you spend a lot of time getting things just right.
Measuring Cups – I am not sure when but all of a sudden many recipes made their way into American measurements. And all of a sudden most recipes I read had the instructions in cups. At first I found it annoying but then after a while I realised how easy it made things. When I have my cereal in a morning I know exactly what 30g is and it saves all the messing around.
Ours are from Disney World with Mickey on them and we use them regularly as part of our daily routine.
Food Blenders – We just upgraded our hand held blender as the one we got off my mum was many years old, so we went with a Philips one and could not belive how powerful it was. This is essential if you like making soups as we do. We used this blender to make our Slimming World soup and Cabbage Soup diets and we were glad it had so much power to get through all the vegetables.
It is also good for making puddings with and general mixing of things. Imagine if you are making some fish cakes – you can simply place the ingredients in the blender and the blender does the work for you!
Woks – We never considered that having a wok was going to be an important tool to have in our kitchen. But after getting a decent wok we realised how often we were using it. We have a lot of stir-frys now and without a wok they would not be as good, we also use it for any meat dishes that require sauces because we feel it cooks the contents a lot more evenly than a traditional pan.
When we are cooking things in the slow cooker and they need the skin cooking we will stick it in the wok first. I also use it for cooking my Chicken Fajitas and for bringing a can of soup to life!
Quality Pan Set – If you buy cheap pans then they wont last five minutes. It is important that you invest in a decent set so that when you are cooking they last years. I like to have a mixture of sizes and couldn’t live without my medium pans. When I am cooking in bulk there is just not enough pans about!
I don’t use my pans as much as I used to. This is because the wok and the slow cooker gets the lion share, but it is nice to have them available to me when I need them.
Slow Cooker – Now this is the best piece of equipment I have ever owned. Mine was given to me by a previous customer when I used to do Kleeneze door to door. At the time the lady had downsized because her children had left home and it was in perfect condition. It has since followed us wherever we have lived and cooks the most amazing meals.
It is through my slow cooker that I have mastered pulled pork, beef stew, sweet and sour chicken, thai chicken and endless other dishes. I bought my mum one a couple of years ago and she loves it.
Casserole Dish – Many people choose to have a slow cooker or a casserole dish. I love both. I like to make a variety of dishes with my casserole dish and it wasn’t until last winter that I bought one on Amazon. It is something I have always wanted I just never really got around to making the purchase.
I love the idea of one pot meals and with the casserole dish you can start cooking it on the stove and then finish it off in the hot oven. It is fantastic for mid week evening meals for all the family to enjoy. Or beef casseroles on a Sunday afternoon that the whole family can enjoy together!
The Grill – You can’t beat a George Foreman Grill and the amount of calories you can save with one is amazing. When we were on holiday in America last year we had a steak and cheese sandwich and it was amazing! We have now re-created it at home with the grill. Some fillet steak thinly sliced on the George Foreman Grill inside a wholemeal roll with diet Philadelphia Cheese. It is truly amazing and so worth the effort.
It can also be served with some low fat chips in the Air Fryer for the perfect evening meal.
