Why is it that food is just not the same without a sauce? You have a burger and you have some relish, you have a brandy sauce with your steak, a cheese sauce with some broccoli and not to mention a big dollop of mayonnaise with your chicken sandwich.
That’s why I have always hated eating plain salads. They simply need their moisture so that the person that’s eaten it, doesn’t die of a boring salad death!
I have decided to highlight my favourite cheats versions of the classic sauces so that you can (like me) still enjoy a fantastic sauce with your meals and snacks.
The Garlic Sauce Recipe
Oh my god! Growing up with holidays in Spain would not be the same without a LOT of garlic sauce. You would be sat out in the sunshine enjoying some fresh white bread and would be dipping it into the trusted garlic dip. Talk about garlic heaven. Though, I have never found anyone as obsessed about it as I am.
I remember coming back from a holiday in Lanzarote when Kyle was about 3 and Dominic’s hand baggage rattling as he carried all my garlic sauce jars home with us. I think he has finally forgiven me for what one, but I am not sure!
Anyway here is my healthy recipe and this tastes fantastic and is a lot less calories than the real thing.
My Tzatziki Recipe
I have been on holiday to the Greek Isles a few times when I was growing up. One thing I got sick of was boring Greek Salads. I mean I hated olives then and I still can’t stand olives now!
But the tomatoes were always nice and it was always made to taste much better with a good helping of Tzatziki Sauce. The taste of the cucumber, the lemon and the garlic together alongside some Greek Yoghurt is perfect!
You can download my version of it here and enjoy it and it goes perfectly with a homemade kebab.
BBQ Sauce Recipe
I love a good barbeque sauce. I have had several barbeques over the years and it wouldn’t be the same without the trusted BBQ marinade on most of the food. In the 90’s growing up everyone was obsessed with hosting a BBQ for their friends. Each of my aunts and uncles would have one, then as I got older and was enjoying motorhome holidays it was always a BBQ at the side of the campsite.
But you always want a naughty sauce to go with it, yes you can have your burgers without one, but your chicken wings always need that extra flavour. This is when my BBQ sauce recipe comes out.
The Tomato Sauce Recipe
Now this is the tomato sauce recipe that I have brought out a cookbook about (read about it here) and its one of those sauces that you use in most things and I adapt it for whatever I particularly need.
It works well for a pasta sauce, even better as a burger relish, a base for a soup, a stock and even as a cheese sauce alternative for fondues. Or like our son treat it as the new ketchup!
The thing is, its there for whatever you need it to be and is incredibly good for you with lots of fat burning elements. You can grab the recipe here.
And there you have it, my favourite sauces that will keep your food from being boring and then use them as the bases for other things and then mix them with out things to add flavour. For example I love to add a little tomato sauce to my garlic sauce to make a fantastic thousand island sauce.
