Healthy Lifestyle: The MWLD Definition
In order to create a healthy lifestyle, we must first understand exactly what the term healthy lifestyle really means. Definitions vary. In my experience, what most dieters and fitness wannabes crave—and what we focus on here at MWLD is:
Eating lots of fresh healthy food, getting off our backsides to do some exercise and then feeling less guilty when we dip into a bar of chocolate.
In other words, we look after ourselves so that we can be a healthy weight, spend time together as a family and still have treats when we feel the need. We don’t want torturing with celebrity diets we want to enjoy ourselves and at MWLD we will show you how to make this possible.
Healthy Lifestyle: The First Steps
You can’t just wake up one day and say that you are going to have a healthy lifestyle. It just doesn’t work like that, especially if you hav
e been overindulging in a lot of calories.
Take the typical obese contestant of Supersize Vs Superskinny. They will often consume 4000 calories a day (if not more) and if you asked them to adapt to a healthy lifestyle and have things in moderation (which often sees a drop down to 1500 calories) then they can’t do it, as their body just can’t adapt quick enough.
That is why to adapt a new healthy lifestyle I recommend you follow the first steps:
1. Complete a diary of exactly how many calories you are consuming
This is always the first step to take. See exactly how bad your calorie consumption is. Where you are getting the majority of your calories from. Make sure you include drinks and sauces as these often get forgotten about and also weigh your food.
Then over the week you will have created an average daily calorie intake and can see how many calories you are really consuming before you adapt to a new lifestyle.
2. Change 10 recipes over the next month for healthier versions
Now this is a big deal and can really help you get started to thinking like a healthy person. What if you normally have chicken fajitas on a Friday night for supper? And you have them served with of single cream and way too much fat? Then I would downgrade the recipe to our version of chicken fajitas instead.
Then why not look at other recipes you are eating to see how else you can cut calories.
Here are a few favourites from our recipe section:
- Chicken Jalfrezi
- Fish & Chips
- Beef Roast
- Steak & Ale Pie
- Egg Fried Rice
- Burger, Chips & Milkshake
- Leek & Butternut Squash Soup
- Strawberry Cheesecake
- Chocolate Mousse
3. Improve with some kitchen gadgets
If there has been ONE SINGLE THING that I hold above everything else for helping me with my weight loss, it has to be kitchen gadgets.
They make healthy eating so much easier and you soon realise you can make tasty food without shed loads of calories.
Here are the kitchen gadgets that we gladly own:
Philips Airfryer – now this is amazing. You can have amazing low calorie chips for the same calories as eating a jacket potato and they actually taste like chip shop chips.
They can also cook loads of other great things too, for example I love using them for crisping my jacket potatoes, making roast potatoes, making healthy croutons and a whole range of other things.
Plus it operates on air not on fat so you won’t have that haze in your kitchen after cooking!
Slow Cooker – Now you would be amazed by how many recipes there are involving slow cookers online. The reason I believe for this, is that people are busy and slow cookers are incredibly easy to use.
You add your ingredients and then you COOK – it is as simple as that! You can make a healthy version of pulled pork, lots of dishes with homemade tomato sauces and it also rather good for keeping your food warm.
Casserole Dish – Now these are an asset to your kitchen. A lot of people put their weight gain down to being too busy to cook. Well with a casserole dish you can cook the dish in one pot and then finish it off in the oven.
It is the same casserole dish that I use in my chicken thighs recipe that we have whenever we have the time as we love it so much!
They are also built to a very high specification and as such will last for years.
Food Steamer – Now if you have not had vegetables in one of these, then you have really been missing out! Isn’t it horrible the way veg when you boil it, ends up turning into a horrible bland mush on your plate?
Well when you steam food instead, it keeps all its flavour and tastes like organic food. It actually makes you want to look forward to tucking into a floret of broccoli.
We use ours for vegetables, fish, chicken and rice and it tastes delicious.
Soup Machine – Now this is something that I never imagined getting for myself. But it is here and I love using it. If you think of healthy recipes it never comes any better than with soup. You can just cook all those amazing vegetables together and it can give you an excellent health kick.
We love ours more than we thought we would and its also a fantastic alternative to a blender and for making delicious low calorie sauces.
4. Make an extra three small lifestyle changes
Now look at healthy people and see what they do and then see what changes you could make.
- Drinking more water
- Drinking less alcohol
- Drinking less fizzy drinks
- Eating more protein
- Eating less fast food
- Eating less chocolate
If you notice I mention the words “less” and “more” because we are talking about a healthy lifestyle here, not cutting something out of your diet completely. You want to just bit that little bit healthier, you don’t want to eat or drink like a rabbit.
5. Exercise for 15 minutes a day
I am talking about getting off your butt and actually doing exercise that gets you moving and gets your metabolism moving.
When we first started this blog, we would achieve this by spending 15 minutes a day on the Wii Fit. But it’s all about what kind of exercise you enjoy and how you are going to get your body moving.
Don’t feel you have to join the gym (unless you really want to) as most people find it boring and they never stick to it.
My favourite exercise at the moment is walking my dog, but it depends what your interests are.
6. Smart calorie choices
Science is interesting when it comes to weight loss. It clearly states that if you reduce your calories over 7 days by 3000 then you will lose 2 pounds. So if you are consuming 4000 calories a day, then a drop of 430 calories a day (consuming 3570) will achieve this. And is rather good as it means you only need to drop your calories by just over 10% to see results.
But if you are on 2000 calories a day and need to drop to 1570 this can be more difficult as you are dropping your calories by nearly a quarter. And this is the main reason why we do so well in the first week in January, because we are no longer eating the large calories we did over Christmas.
Therefore we need to make smart calorie choices. If you are consuming 2000 a day then look at where you can shave some off. Can you swap wine for spirits? Could you exercise for 30 minutes a day and burn 400 calories a day instead?
Just think about where your calories go, and its easier than you think without having to go on the cabbage soup diet!
7. Eat fat burning foods
There are 101 fat burning foods out there:
And these are everyday foods that we should all be eating and drinking. Just imagine if you had chicken for your lunch rather than a sandwich, or you had more fruit and vegetables in your diet?
Here is an example of a healthy diet day in my world, where I eat what I like but the majority of it is healthy:
- Breakfast = Branflakes & Skimmed Milk & Half A Banana
- Morning Snack = Large Melon Filled With Prawns
- Lunch = Chicken & Rice
- Afternoon Snack = Large Orange
- Dinner = Piri Piri Chicken & Salad
- Supper = Dark Chocolate
If you notice, not all of these items are fat burning foods but fat burning foods is still the majority. And it’s above striking a good balance so that you are enjoying your healthy lifestyle.
