Paula Deen has been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately but now the cook is aiming to help get Americans to eat healthily and lose weight, just like she did, with a new low fat cookbook.
The new Paula Deen cookbook is due out in September and will show a different side to Paula Deen who is famed for her unhealthy meals including lots of southern fried recipes.
According to a report by The Examiner, Paula now wants to share her light recipes after losing 40 pounds in 2013. The 5-foot-5 Deen slimmed down from a size 18 to a 12 by following a low-carb, low-sugar diet and walking on the treadmill every day.
Paula Deen told People: “I created 200 amazing light recipes”
“Plus I cut the calories from 50 of my favourite classic dishes. The best part is that the same delicious Southern taste remains.”
This will be the 15th cookbook from Deen and while it may be low fat recipes on the menu she promises to include all of her old favourites in there including Savannah gumbo soup, Southwest chicken enchiladas and flourless chocolate fudge cake.
Paula Deen saw her career and reputation shattered after she was found to have used racist words and confessed she had once planned to throw a “Southern plantation-styled” wedding featuring African-American slaves.
While the racism scandal was bad enough she was also heavily criticised for hiding the fact she was suffering with type 2 diabetes while promoting unhealthy foods to others.
According to the Examiner, Paula was immediately slammed for hiding her medical condition for almost four years while promoting her unhealthy recipes in her bestselling cookbooks and popular TV cooking shows.
Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, said of her antics: “When your signature dish is a hamburger in between a doughnut, and you’ve been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you’ve got type 2 diabetes, it’s in bad taste if nothing else.”
While the revelations about diabetes won her know friends it appears that the diabetes diagnosis had one bright spot, which is that it spurred Paula’s 40-pound weight loss which according to The Examiner also encouraged both her husband and her two sons to slim down and lose weight to the total of 178 pounds between the family.
Paula lost 40 pounds and her husband Michael Groover shed 60 pounds. Deen’s older son Jamie lost 45 pounds, while her younger son Bobby has maintained a 33-pound weight loss.
“I have been on a very erratic little journey with a psychologist I respect so much,” Paula said. Deen said the support from her loyal fans has also helped her heal. “If it wasn’t for my fans’ love, I’d be home breathing into a paper bag.”
