I am so pleased to say that those behind the Sonic Boom Skipping Rope have sent me over a sample to see what I thought of it. Me and skipping have not got on very well in the past so it is going to be interesting to see how this partnership works out!
The only time in my life, that I was ever any good at skipping, was when I was about seven years old and I was doing it for fun in the school playground. I was at primary school in the late 80’s/early 90’s and skipping ropes, along with tag was the top of the agenda for what kids got up to at break times.
Fast forward to my 20’s and I cam confronted with a skipping rope again. This time I am at the Virgin Active in Bolton and clinically obese. I have joined the gym for a slim hope of losing weight. Only problem is…..the gym is a half an hour taxi ride away and I end up quitting after a month and a half because I just can’t afford to go.
But when I was there I was attempting to do a small one on one class with one of the gym instructors. She was skinny and super toned and I suddenly felt inadequate. She got me to do a few things that were really out of my fitness capabilities and one of them was skipping.
I was trying but……I managed about three times and she kind of gave up on me. And that was me done with skipping.
That is until I partner up with Epitomie Fitness and they introduce me to their advanced skipping rope. Never mind an advanced one, I need one for beginners. I am super unfit and the thought of attempting skipping is really not good. But I also need to step out of my comfort zone as far as exercise is concerned. I can do more than I think and I often still think of myself as the fat person, yet I have a BMI of 22 and sometimes I need reminding of that factor.
So after having to get a favour off an old friend (Amazon doesn’t deliver the skipping rope to Portugal) I eventually end up getting it. And testing it out……. Well that is after my son has stolen it and claimed that he is the fittest family member. Well he is certainly the skinniest and at 14 he better be fitter than me!!!!!
Anyway, there I am holding a skipping rope in my hands for the first time in 10 years and wondering whether me and skipping ropes are doomed or not.
I then have a go and to my surprise I remember four goes before I trip up over it. As Dominic says you can never buy rhythm and I certainly don’t have any. But if I can manage it four times and have tunnel vision and no rhythm then the rest of the world can to.
Because I am writing my Sonic Skipping Rope Review based on the fact that I am useless with one, I thought I would share with you a diary of what skipping I have achieved, to just prove that unfit people can use it too and its not just there for Rocky movie addicts.
It is day one and what is great about this week is that I am also doing a detox in my run up to wanting to finish losing weight by Christmas. I have about 6-7 kilos of weight still to lose and what I love about the skipping rope is that it can help me along the way.
Today for my first time at skipping I manage just two. I know really pathetic so I go back and try again and do 15.
15 is more like it. Especially for someone that hasn’t used a skipping rope in such a long time.
Oh no, I have to use that skipping rope again. Why can’t I just be reviewing chocolate???? I wonder if they do chocolate flavoured skipping ropes? No, I am only kidding.
I actually quite like the idea of a challenge and today I am feeling fit and can’t wait to get skipping. Today I manage 25 of them and feel great that I have done this.
But then Dominic doesn’t believe a word I say and makes me do it again in front of him. So technically for today I end up doing 50.
Unfortunately due to the countryside where we live, there is a lack of flat surfaces to be able to do skipping. So I normally do the skipping in one of our spare bedrooms but thanks to flooding I now have a dip and the ground is no longer level.
So here I am doing it outside and even though I am worried that I am not going to have any rhythm at all, I still manage to achieve 30 skips.
I think I am going to be doing 100 before the week is out…..Well that is probably a bit unrealistic, but it is not a bad idea!
It is day 4 and I have decided to go up in nice even numbers. So for today I manage 40. Not quite a 100 yet, but I am getting there slowly one step at a time.
But what I love is how smooth and easy it is to skip with the Sonic Boom Skipping Rope compared to other ones I have tried out. It just makes it easy, especially for people like me that struggle with their fitness.
Today is day 5 and to celebrate day 5 I manage 50 skips with the skipping rope. It is a nice amount and unlike yesterday I don’t feel that tired and feel like I could take a break and then do some more.
I have worked out the calories and for someone with a BMI of 23 like me they burn 250 calories with 20 minutes of constant skipping. I burn this same amount when doing Zumba and when you compare the effort level you can understand why.
If you’re obese (like I used to be) then you could be talking about burning 1000 calories an hour or 166 for 10 minutes.
It is day 6 and I have decided to go for it today and manage 75. YES SEVENTY-FIVE. Now that is amazing. I never thought that I would take to skipping especially considering that I have always struggled with it. But with this skipping rope it is so easy to use and so smooth it makes it much easier to do!
It is the final day and I am a determined woman with a big target to meet. Well it doesn’t go to plan first time around and I only manage 50. Maybe this is because it is a Sunday and it is just so wrong to exercise on a Sunday. I should be laid on the sofa with my blanket watching movies.
But I have a rest, fill up the slow cooker and then come back for some more. And this time I do it, well I do better than I planned and manage 101 skips. Now this is amazing and I can’t believe this is really me. Maybe it is a dream and a thin fit person is doing it instead?
So over the week I manage to go from not skipping in years (and never been any good at it then) to being able to conquer 101 skips. Now this feels truly amazing and I feel so pleased to have had the opportunity to take it this far and to be able to enjoy it.
This skipping rope is going to get a lot of attention over the years and we are just so pleased to have given it a go. If I hadn’t been approached to write this review, I would never have even thought about skipping for weight loss or for a general fitness option. But I am well and truly sold on it and can’t wait to get back to it.
