I always remember growing up and eating lots of cucumber,
I never have a first memory of it, just plenty of times when it was on the dinner plate. I would have it sliced up as a side snack with whatever we were eating and I am sure it was my mother’s way of making fishfingers and chips come across as nutritious!
My Grandad had an allotment so there was always plenty of cucumber there too and I would snack on it and it was probably the healthiest time in my life!
Kyle has always been rather healthy when it comes to fruit and vegetables, even well before we moved to Portugal and they became even cheaper. When we go to the Chinese Buffet he will pile his plate high with vegetables to take to wok station, while I see other children at the buffet just eating chicken dippers that are drowning in fat.
But cucumbers have to be one of his favourites!!!!
He can never get enough of them and if there is a whole cucumber in the fridge he will take it out and eat the whole lot, just like someone else would do with a piece of fruit.
But there is no way he is totally unhealthy
He absolutely hates water with a passion!!!
Always has and I am sure he always will and even at school when they try and enforce it, he will do everything he can to try and get out of it!
I remember being on holiday at Disney World and we were at a restaurant and had ordered milkshakes with our meal, well while they were been made they brought us some water and he totally freaked out and you would have thought at the time that we had put a theme park ban on him.
I have now learnt to accept that he will never be a big water fan and will prefer some low calorie cordial with water, than having water on its own.
Though, living in Portugal in the summer it is super hot and even he drinks a bit of it then, just because the dehydration is so bad if you don’t.
But my back up plan is the good old cucumber. It is majority water and is perfect for dehydration. I can give it to him everyday and know that not only is he getting extra water but can also enjoy the vitamin benefits.
If you child hates water too (quite a lot do) then introduce cucumber as the new snack and know that you have found another way to get around your child and his bad habits.
