Sofia and I have recently joined a mother and toddler group at a local bar by the seaside here in the Algarve. It’s a great local bar with the most amazing views you’ve ever seen.
There are quite a few mums and babies that come now and it was created because there wasn’t really much available for new mums to be able to get out with their babies. It also feels like more of a drop in centre because with us all having things on, we are not all there every week. And it’s always great to see who is going to be there from week to week.
Well anyway, I never went to any mother and baby groups when Kyle was a baby. I was way too embarrassed. Call it having a catholic Grandmother as the reason. I just didn’t want people judging me because I had my child out of wedlock and was still a teenager (I was 19).
So this was my first group as such as a mother to a young baby.
We also understand that when we have just had a child weight issues are always top of the problems list and it is certainly at the top for me.
Of course, many women have gained weight the most after pregnancy and you would think this group would be no different but its amazing how many of them are super skinny.
We have the super skinny German lady that looks like the famous German model from the 90’s that hasn’t even got a kilo around the stomach to keep her warm during winter.
Then you have the ones that are of average size and build – somewhere that I would like to be at some point in the future. Though, target weights always seem like such a long way away.
I was sat with a few of the ladies last week, then looking around I soon realised that I was indeed the oldest (I am 33) and also the fattest!
Sofia on the other hand doesn’t follow my lead as she is the smallest of the group (well she was this week).
When looking back over my weight gains and losses between pregnancies I have also noticed I weigh the same. With Kyle I ate too much that I shouldn’t when I was pregnant, this of course led to a weigh gain. Then with Sofia because I had lost weight before pregnancy I was much more cautious, the end result being that I only gained 1.5 stone and was at my pre-pregnancy weight straight after.
Yet here I am with a four month old baby – weighing exactly the same 13 years apart. I massive 12 stone 7 pounds. However, if I was at my target weight by now (9 stone 3 pounds) I am sure I would one of the leaner/slimmer ones.
But one can hope can’t they????
And my plan is that I will there by later this year so watch this space for that…..I am just super grateful that I have had some weight loss prior to pregnancy as I am sure I would be a lot more body conscious if I was attending this group being 4 stone heavier than I am now.
