Now brace yourself as this is one diet that I have wanted to do for ages but have never quite got around to, this is mainly because it is super strict and involved eating at certain times of the day.
But first let me take you back to the beginning and explain how all this came about:
I bought my soup machine just before Sofia was born and it was about October last year when I got it. My food steamer had just died on me after a lot of use, my juicer had done the same and I also knew that it wouldn’t be long before I had a baby that I needed to wean with lots of pureed baby food.
Therefore because I also loved soup, the soup machine came about.
We have the Portuguese version of this one:
It makes me a soup that is blended and smooth in 25 minutes and it takes me less than five minutes to prepare them.
So I decided to look into the idea of following a soup diet by using my soup machine, to see what the results would be like.
But first let me show you what I have done so far and the results:
Now I loved replacing two meals a day, but the cabbage soup diet was hell and then I also thought about how I love the idea of the juice diet craze but would rather not have all that juicing to do and eating lots of vegetables is much better for us all than mass amounts of fruit.
So I decided to take this theory into practice and to follow an intensive soup diet with lots of exercise thrown in for good measure. My target is to lose 7 pounds in a week. This may seem unrealistic but if you can lose 4.5 pounds in a week and still keep one of your meals why can’t you achieve that little bit more?
I will consume one of my ten soups at the rate of six portions a day, so I will make two different soups a day one will cover batch one and the other will cover batch two.
I will also start the day and end the day with a herbal tea, drink three litres of water per day and have at least one hour of exercise per day.
Now even writing that down it sounds like the craziest challenge I have ever done and I am ready and willing to give it a go!
Why is it you see the word “diet” and all of a sudden you want to eat everything in sight?
Well here I am and I want to eat EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING!
But I don’t as I am serious about this soup challenge and I am determined to give it a go. I have vegetable soup and broccoli soup today and both are absolutely delicious. And I can’t get enough of them, who said soup had to be bad?
They are super good for you and I am rather shocked with how low in calories they actually are.
I have done a lot of exercising before starting the soup today (an hour on the Wii Fit) that I find that I on negative calories and rather hungry so I try not to think about the food too much.
Day 2 and it feels amazing to say that yesterday felt like a breeze and really didn’t bother me that much!
So I haven’t had any chocolate or sweets or lollies, but I am still feeling super satisfied with all my favourite soups!
Though by the end of today I do feel tired. This is because I have been busy running around doing things, Sofia is poorly with her first cold, I am doing her food for the next couple of months and it is really draining trying to fit in an hour of exercise.
But I did it!
Hello day 3 and I am having a lot of bad things going on this morning workwise. Normally I would reach for some chocolate but I am being GOOD. And I am proud of the fact that I am sticking to my guns and having a super veg week.
I have just done the maths and I am due on my period which is really not good without chocolate – I think Dominic will be filling for divorce before the week is up!
Today I have more butternut squash from yesterday (I cant believe how many portions it makes) and then finish the day with some celery soup. I just love celery soup and its super low in calories!
What I actually find hardest in this challenge is not quitting my favourite foods, but consuming all this soup and drinking all this water. I would normally get through about 1 litre of water a day, so to triple it, is even harder than you’d think.
I remember two days ago sat watching television and it was around 8pm and I was downing ½ a litre of water just to get my quota in!
Today I have the last of last night’s celery soup for breakfast and then in the afternoon it is back to the broccoli soup. Out of them all the broccoli soup is my second best and it tastes amazing. But the main reason for having it today is that my broccoli is really sweaty and looks like its going to go off if it doesn’t get eaten soon!!!!
I have now passed the half way point and surprisingly I am not getting any urge to cheat. I am feeling tired but I believe that’s a combination of low calories and working long hours.
Hello day 5 and its Friday. My day for making a super tasty supper for us all and enjoying a nice evening in.
Now what on earth am I going to cook if I am not going to be involved in eating it? Well I end up making Dominic a lovely piece of chicken breast in a smoked paprika sauce with some of the leftover potatoes into our Airfryer and it looks absolutely delicious.
I have five rounds of broccoli soup and one lot of vegetable soup. I have found that in the heat that we currently have in Portugal that the vegetables are turning way too fast and I am putting them all in the soup machine together so that I can rescue them as I hate food waste.
It is Saturday and all I want is normal food but then again I also want to be skinny so there are sacrifices to me made!
I am also starting to find the soup disgusting but I am sure it’s a case of no pain no gain and this is much better than taking tablets or doing excessive amount of exercise.
Finally! I am pleased to say that it’s the last day of my challenge and I am near the end. I am dreaming about everything including things that I am normally not that bothered for. Why do I want a steak pie when I hate steak pie?
I think anything would be better than soup, but at the same time I am super excited by the results.
And the results are in. I have actually avoided temptation and not weighed myself for a week. I have wanted to do it everyday to see how the week has progressed but I have completely avoided it!
I have lost 3.5 kilos or otherwise known as just over 7.5 pounds and I officially weigh the same amount as I did when I got married. On another note, I was also about this weight at the worst of my morning sickness and the funny thing is I feel like I have morning sickness. Not because I am pregnant but because of all this daily exercise and not much calories wise it has given me similar symptoms.
I am sure you are wondering if I would do this again. Well no I wouldn’t, but not because I hate soup but because it felt too restrictive. However I would gladly follow my soup replacement diet instead. This was when I replaced two meals a day with soup and I still lost a good chunk of weight and it made me feel fantastic!
I did this out of curiosity because I wanted to see how much weight I could lose by stepping it up a gear and even through I hated it come day 6, the first five days were not really that bad, so maybe making it into a “lose 5 pounds in 5 days diet” might be better suited.
I also ate a lot of broccoli soup and if I had changed the soups more often then maybe it might not have annoyed me as much!
Towards the last two days I also couldn’t manage all the soup portions so as a result I ended up consuming very little calories, but it is rather hard to eat all that soup for 7 full days!
Get The Soups
Would you like to get the soups that we used in this experiment? They are all previously published on the blog and you can access them on the links below:
They are all fat burning soups and are excellent for weight loss and there was a time that if you followed a soup diet, that you were stuck on the cabbage soup diet and lets face it the cabbage soup always looks horrible doesn’t it?
What I love about my soup machine diet is that you can prep a soup in less than 10 minutes, then it does the hard work for you and you just sit back and enjoy your soup.
Here is the soup machine we would recommend for this diet:
And best of luck with your own soup diet, or just like me why not use it as a meal replacement for two meals a day? You’ll still have impressive weight loss and can still look forward to a meal of your choice once a day!
