Did you know that tinned tomatoes are more nutritious than fresh tomatoes? This is because they keep their freshness as it is going into the can so fast and is one of those foods that we should all have in our diet on a regular basis.
But don’t take my word for it; here is a report from Food Unwrapped that talks about it in more detail.
And it got me thinking about meal replacements and what I wanted to achieve from my body, so I set my sights on a tinned tomato week. I lost a good chunk of weight at the beginning of the year when I followed Bootcamp In A Bottle. Great weight loss but the drink tasted horrible and I replaced two meals a day with it.
So what if you could find something you really liked instead of meal replacement drinks? Well that was the plan and I wanted something that was less than 120 calories a portion and something I actually liked.
Therefore I will be replacing two of my meals a day this week with tinned tomatoes. With their tasty flavour and just over 100 calories a tin they are a dish made in heaven.
After returning from a nice morning walk with my puppy I am there tucking into a can of tinned tomatoes and remembering how much I love them. They are not just created for English Breakfasts or for making a pasta sauce.
For lunch it is the turn of my main cooked meal of the day and it is one of my favourites – fresh salmon, chips and broccoli. The chips are in the Airfryer so everything is healthy!
In the evening I have some tinned tomatoes and I amazed by how much I love something that is so low in calories and filling at the same time. I am sure you’ve heard this before, but tomatoes are incredibly good for your health and it’s a fantastic way to stay healthy!
Today for breakfast, you guessed it…..tinned tomatoes. Well we have catering tins of them so I am still technically on tin number 1. If I was following the 5:2 diet I could have four of these cans a day and then have some chocolate and it wouldn’t feel like a diet day at all.
For lunch I made Spanish chicken in the wok and it tastes delicious. Lots of red wine, onions, new potatoes and of course chicken breast. I love Mediterranean cooking and its amazing what you can achieve in 20 minutes when you are in a rush. I just wonder why I wasted so much money and calories on takeaways when I was living in England.
In the evening I have some more tinned tomatoes while looking through some old magazines that my mum has just dropped off. Seriously? Why am I torturing myself looking at all these delicious recipes when I have just tinned tomatoes for company?
Today is a new day and I am rather enjoying my tinned tomato binges. What I do find when I am following meal replacement, is that you end up putting a lot more effort into that remaining meal.
So I am super excited over what Dominic is going to make us all for lunch. Kyle is not at school today so that means we need a lot more food to satisfy our teenage son and wow he eats a lot!
We end up having some chicken in the wok. It is served with onions, a nice sauce and lots of fresh broccoli. Talk about yummy and not that much in calories either. I then finish lunch off with an ice lolly from the freezer and I am super satisfied and not hungry at all.
In the evening it is back to the tinned tomatoes, and just to show how big one catering pack of tomatoes goes, I am still on can number #1.
I am really getting sugar cravings though, as I have hardly had any chocolate in recent weeks and it is starting to get to me now!
Hello day 4 and guess what I am having for breakfast? Yes you guessed right it’s the good old tinned tomatoes. I just can’t believe something so tasty is so low in calories. If you think you would have to eat 10 cans of them to hit the same level of calories as a McDonalds.
Though I am a bad dieter, so I would rather have the Maccy D’s 🙂
For lunch we have one of my all time favourites – courgette fritters and chips with a nice dollop of mayonnaise. You just can’t beat it and even though its not the best thing for your diet, its not the worst either!
Part of this week was to see how many more calories I would eat, from the one meal a day, given that I am restrictive for two meals.
The idea is that if you are being starved for two meals of the day, you will then end up eating more. Well as this week is progressing I am finding that this is exactly what I am doing!
For dinner this evening I end up having a big quiche (well I do share it with Dominic & Kyle) and jacket potatoes. It is a full high carbs and high fat meal and then I finish it off with a big chocolate bar.
This is really not good for my “slim for October” plans.
On another note, I love tinned tomatoes and have really not got sick of them this week!
It is day 6 and today Kyle and I are helping out at a fair. We are on the charity stall for the local dog charity and unfortunately for me, we are very close to the food hall. There are lots of food and way too many stalls selling sugary delights.
The Indian counter (that we usually go to each year) is not there this year so we end up at the stall offering paella and have loads.
Then we wash this down with some chocolate cake, oh and the chocolate cake is super tasty and certainly worth the extra calories.
All in all the food is delicious and I should be banned from places like this if I ever want to stay (or even get) slim.
It is day 7 and I forgot how many calories can be nested into a Sunday roast. Well I say Sunday roast, what we actually had was toad in the hole, with veggie bake, mash and gravy.
And as I seem addicted to puddings at the moment it had to be washed down with chocolate pudding and custard. I made the chocolate pudding and Dominic made the custard, so we are rather an unhealthy pairing, but great for making puddings together!
I end the week with some tinned tomatoes left over so I am planning lots of nice tomato sauces to make use of them J
As expected a big fat ugly weight gain. I have put on a kilo and this makes me 3 stone now off my target and I am starting to wonder if my scales hate me!!!!
I did expect something like this to happen though, so it’s not a surprise and I am not annoyed about it or disappointed as it’s the kind of week I was trying out!
