Our beautiful puppy Demon is now four months old and even though he is a handful he is a pleasure to have in our lives.
He is also a Labrador Husky cross and this means that he requires a lot of runs and walking with me in my overweight state is just not going to cut it. At the same time, I want to get out more and want to get fitter and running is something I want to take up. Therefore I have made it for my challenge for this week to introduce some extra exercise for me and my boy.
The big plan
I plan to walk him (with a bit of jogging included) both mornings and evenings for half an hour each time. In the morning I will focus on him doing a bit of light jogging (well as much as I can manage) then on an evening I will do it with Kyle and Sofia. Sofia will then be in the baby carrier so I wont be able to jog, but her extra weight will mean that I will burn a lot more calories.
The puppy will of course love the extra exercise and it would be wrong not to embrace what a wonderful area of countryside that we live in.
I am rather looking forward to it and we will see how it goes!

It is the first day and at 7.40am I am leaving the house with my cute puppy in tow. Its amazing as a non-morning person how I manage to get up at this time, yet here I am about to do some exercise!!!!
We do 15 minutes in one direction and then 15 minutes back again to come home. The time actually flies because the views are simply amazing.
We do a little jogging on the way back, but not much as I want to be able to build up my pace than do something I can’t manage.
Then in the evening I attach Sofia to me in the baby carrier and we are off again. I am due to get her weighed this week and she is rather heavy and it will be interesting to see how much excess weight I am carrying around with me.
We manage the same as yesterday. Half an hour in the morning with Demon on his lead, followed by half an hour in the evening with Sofia in her baby carrier and Kyle walking the dog.
He points out to me in typical teenager style that he is walking the puppy so I am cheating, but there is also the fact he is super excited and with me having Sofia I can’t control both of them. But I am still out in the beautiful countryside and enjoying the fresh air and getting fit at the same time and isn’t that all that matters????
It is day three and I know that I have a lot of swimming to do today, so I have decided to do an hour in the morning, because I know that I wont have the energy to do it this evening!
We have a good walk down the lane and as a Husky he wants to run so I do a couple of sprints with him and it feels amazing to be active and running down the lane. And an hour is soon done and it’s before 9am when we get back.
I can’t believe the buzz I have from some exercise, it feels absolutely amazing!
I am up earlier than usual this morning so after getting dressed and making myself look less scary, I am out with my boy.
He is incredibly lively this morning and wants me to run like Linford Christie, something that I will never be able to do, but I still manage a couple of sprints with him.
I am wondering fitness wise, whether I can handle him or not. I just feel like I am holding him back, especially with him being a puppy.
In the evening it is beautiful weather yet again and I spend the evening running up and down the lane with Demon. He loves the fresh air and even though he is scared of everything in sight, he is really starting to enjoy going for his walks.
It is Friday and it’s also one of those crazy days when I have a lot of housework to do, washing to do, food to cook and then of course Demon to walk. So there I am at 7.30am in the morning taking him for a walk down the lane. Then cracking on with the other jobs that I have to do.
I rather enjoy walking him and its nice to know that given my speed and BMI that I am burning 200 calories for each walk I take him on.
Though of course the evening walk burns more because I am also carrying Sofia and all 7 kilos of her, out front are making it a fantastic calorie burning session.
Plus Sofia loves it, for her it’s a similar motion as when I sway her for a dance and she spends most of the half an hour giggling.
It is day 6 and I have been getting bored of the same old walk everyday and wanted to do an hours walk this morning – so what did I do?
I asked Kyle to take me to where his dad drops him in the morning for the school bus.
He told me that it is roughly an hour so it seems like a great plan. I am at the same time aware that it is downhill going and that coming back I do have to walk back up that hill. And its not just a simple hill either, we are talking a very steep incline because you are walking into a big valley!
Anyway I did it, it was very hard but I got there in the end and even though I had a few stops on the way back up while I caught my breath it was worth it. This was probably like doing 90 minutes in the gym and felt absolutely fantastic.
Even though I am tired I would love to do this same walk again sometime soon. Though, I will certainly take Kyle with me again as its nice to have company on such a harsh walk.
It is the final day and I am buzzing. I forgot how much fun exercise can actually be. Today we do the same as yesterday and its amazing that I manage this considering A) it is a Sunday and B) that I am super unfit.
Well maybe I was unfit and I am not so unfit now?
I am amazed by how a week of something simple such as walking the dog can have such a great reaction on your body. I feel energetic and feel so full of energy that I can’t believe I have done an hour’s exercise a day and feel like I could do more and more.
I started slowly at the beginning of the week and then towards the end increased it to a walk up a steep hill and I am just amazed that I can do it.
On a calories burned point of view I have burned 3010 calories in one week. Along side a healthy diet week this is an excellent way to get fit and get out there.
I have decided to continue with the walking but on a five day a week routine. That way on days off I can take him for a longer walk and then on work days a quick 30 minute walk before breakfast.
Either way I am motivated for more and for getting fit!
