A domain name is with you for the life of a website. It’s the first decision you make when you decide to start a weight loss blog and make money online. And with so many domains being in use it can be hard to choose the right one for you.
For me I follow the plan below:
Choose your extension
You firstly have to decide whether you are targeting a particular part of the world and want a local domain name like we did with My Weight Loss Dream.
The reason we chose a UK domain is that we find a lot of the time especially when it comes to talking about food that there is a lot of differences between the UK & the US. I have often visited US websites and never understood what they are talking about and had to Google many of the recipe instructions and in the end it ended up being more hassle than it was worth.
The UK is still a big place and there is a lot of scope to go at with niches and building up a big readership. We are also finding that we are seeing an increase in traffic coming via SEO from Google.com and our American audience is increasing.
Don’t go for a local extension that you are not familiar with – for example you can’t do a Canadian site if you have no experience with your market otherwise your readers won’t take to your content.
Also if you are going for a local market you have to expect to find freelancers that know the market. For example we only have European writers working for us as our writing support staff.
Secondly, choose a popular extension. There is no point going with these silly endings as you are stuck with this domain for a long time. Go with either a local, .com, .net, .info or .org.
There has often been a bad reputation associated with .info though I have used it on many of my websites and it has always done really well.
Choosing your domain name
If you are going with a local domain you will have to choose the name yourself and this can be when people get domain selection block!
This is why I would consider the following before choosing a domain name:
#1 – What is the main keyword of your site going to be?
If it is going to be weight loss then that domain name must have weight loss in it like we do with myweightlossdream.co.uk. You also need to look at what you want to achieve with the website and where you see the content generation going.
In the old days people would choose an exact match domain name for the keyword they are targeting. But Google is very anti this method and it can result in you losing SEO positions at a later date and should be avoided. However your website is never going to be based around just one piece of content therefore you will need a broad keyword.
#2 – Avoid personal branding
For example if you are creating a blog about yourself make sure it doesn’t come across as too personal because then if you are selling it at a later date it is much harder to get a good price for your business.
Therefore avoid domain names that cover your name, your exact location, your race and such like because these are so hard to take the branding off when you are coming around to selling the website.
#3 – What is your website end goal?
If you are planning a website around a particular adventure make sure this comes out on your domain name. For example for me it’s my dream to lose weight. Your dream or inspiration may be to learn to run or to take part in marathons. Or you may just like to cook and want to design a healthy eating website.
Whatever it is – plan around it.
#4 – Godaddy Auctions for inspiration
If you are not getting a local domain name then I would give Godaddy a go. Because you can get some fantastic domain ideas and even grab some domains that are years old and already have traffic coming into them, giving you an excellent head start.
On looking right now for domains with weight loss in them I found the following:
This just lists 11 domains all finishing within the next 6 hours and all of which have no bids on them.
And you could pick any one of those up for less than $20. This to me is a fantastic bargain! You can of course search by traffic and other results until you find one that suits you. And there are hundreds of them and all of them are available for a very low price and will be at least 12 months old.
If you have not read it already here is the link to my introduction to the Godaddy auctions.
#5 – Never get trademarked domain names
There is always that opinion that if you are creating a blog about a diet you are following that the diet name must be in your domain. Such as myweightwatchersblog.com (or similar). But if you write something on your blog that the trademark owners don’t like they can have your domain removed in a shot.
This can then mean that each time you write something you are putting your business in jeopardy. This is something you certainly don’t want to do. And of course write about them in your content (just like I do) but remember not to have them in your domain name.
#6 – Avoid one word domain names
These domain names never seem to have the success that people expect as bloggers. And because words like fitness, diet and healthy are already taken you’re not going to find a one word domain name that is suitable for you.
I have come across some terrible names for domain names recently that have been one word ones and you look at the word and wonder what on earth you are going to put on the website!
Then once you have thought it over and made your decision then go ahead and buy your domain name and enjoy building your first website or blog.
