I am a big fan of Google and as many of you know a big proportion of my traffic comes from search engine optimisation. SEO is fabulous and as bloggers people are either extremely pro or very anti what SEO can do for their online business.
I like to position myself slap bang in the middle….
I love my SEO and it contributes to about half of all visitors through to My Weight Loss Dream.
But at the same time we can’t JUST rely on the search engines as one day someone can suddenly decide that they don’t like your site and you have an SEO crash and don’t get it back for 3-4 months. Then all of a sudden you come from getting 5000 visitors a day to close to zero and your $5000 a month blog is suddenly bringing in $0. Or it is probably making a loss because you still have to pay your outsourcing team or cover the cost of your hosting no matter what.
But when I was starting out I heard from an SEO guy and he sold me his sales speech and I was sold on the idea of my website just relying on SEO and how rich all that traffic was going to make me.
Or there was all the traffic software available, that now seems so old school.
So last week I got an email from someone that firstly asked me for free coaching (what a cheek) and then he gave me the line that I have heard a million times over the last decade:
“I’m Expecting Lots Of Traffic After My SEO Work Is Complete”
I actually cringe when people say this nowadays, because there is more to website traffic than this. Especially when I checked out his website! I am not here to knock him, but to point out that his site was very old school and obviously designed by someone with no experience with creating a webpage. And a single page with content. His contact page, his newsletter sign up page and even his social media was all on the one page.
In case I am missing something somewhere to be able to complete SEO you need to have lots of content and he just planned to throw links at the one page.
It made me realise that he was in cloud cuckoo land and it actually reminded me of a client in the past that had the same attitude. He was back in 2010 and I couldn’t believe it, when I checked out the email it was the same person. He hadn’t realised that I had sold up and operated under Weight Loss Bloggers and I wasn’t about to share that nugget of information with him!
When I pointed out that he needed to improve his site and work on his content management he accused me of pooing on his head and insulting him.
And I realised he had the exact same plans for his online business all those years ago as he has now.
Plus it got me thinking how we have this opinion on SEO. And seriously if you take a good hard look at anyone successful with SEO traffic or traffic in general you’ll see that no one relies just on search engine optimisation and for long term growth we all need to branch out and take note of what is happening around us.
This is also the very reason why, when I move into the new office that I will be branching into Podcasts. And I have lots of other new traffic plans in the pipeline. You simply can’t run an online site and have a vague plan for traffic as it just won’t happen for you. That is unless some big brand shares your content or recommends you to others and I am still waiting for that!!!!
