As someone that has been working in internet marketing for nearly a decade I have had my fair share of clients in the weight loss niche. Some have been successful and some haven’t.
I came across one of my old clients that had decided to go alone nearly a year ago as I was having a browse on the internet and couldn’t believe what damage they had done to their online business. Then I decided to look through some of my other clients and this is my list of whe
re they went wrong – so that you can make sure that none of this applies to you……
The Everything HAS To Be Perfect – Yoga Niche
I had one client that actually made me pretty wealthy. So really I shouldn’t really have a reason to complain as the project manager I am not. But from the clients prospective I just want to scream at them.
When we came along the designer wasn’t doing the best of jobs so we copied their design to the letter and made sure it was just how they wanted it. Then they wanted changes, more changes, another lot of changes. And a website that SHOULD have been up in a six week window. Took nearly a year to complete with extra changes constantly added.
I am not saying you put an ugly website out there or a third class product BUT you have to learn that the internet is not perfect and that while you are making sales you can be fixing (from your profits) rather than getting yourself into debt.
I estimate that all the changes (because we were working by the hour) took the project from $750 to $17,500 and meant that at the end of the design stage there was no money left for marketing.
I had a look at their website last week (the website that triggered this post) and noticed that they have changed the web design three times now and lost all the branding that they originally had. Their Alexa rank has dropped from 600,000 to over a million and I can’t see any marketing going on at all.
In my opinion though – it was the best product I have ever worked with and if the “everything perfect” system had been left alone they would have a super successful website right now.
I have changed many of my clients often, just because there are always new themes coming out that you fall in love with. BUT I will always concentrate on bringing money in first and new designs are very much down the line.
Branding & Principles – Yoga Niche
This actually applies to the same site and I felt it was that important it should get covered twice. And this is about branding and keeping your website with the principles that you built your site over.
If you are going to brand your website – then make sure you brand you. Don’t go changing your tagline and replacing good quality pictures of yourself with stock photography because it is just not going to happen.
People will no longer associate you with the website and any work you have already been done will be wasted.
The Sales Letter – Abs Niche
With any website the principle must be a sales place where you can do the big sell on your product. You must have one otherwise people will be confused. They will wonder what they are paying for, what they are getting and even if you do get sales conversions will be low.
On a lot of the failing websites that I have been asked to put together strategies for the main issue has been that they don’t actually have a sales page up – just a payment button on the corner of their website. And most people are not even going to see it.
What you actually need is a separate sales page with full details of what you’re buying and then send as much traffic as you can to this page. Because the more people that visit this page = the more sales you’ll receive.
Update Your Blog – Weight Loss Blog Niche
I want to scream at people about this one! If you don’t update your blog regularly people won’t know about you, you wont get Google authority and you wont get noticed.
Before writing this post I went through my entire old client’s blogs (where I had put the blogs up for them or done them a strategy) to see who was actually using the money wisely and providing content and traffic to the site. And guess what? 90% of them had not been updating their blog more than once every three months.
Until a blog gains authority you need to be looking at daily posts and then once a blog has authority you still need to be blogging 5 times a week. Because for each piece of content you create and market you are adding to the traffic of your website.
You can’t just leave it to go to the dogs…….
These are the main areas that I have seen people go wrong with their weight loss sites. Most of you will be laughing at me wondering whether people are really this bad! As these are very simple things. If you can just avoid these and have quality content coming into your site you will be 80% there with the success of your website.
So think of that as you build your business up and most of all good luck with it.
