The beauty of Thesis and using it for your WordPress Blog is that very few Plugins are actually needed and because very few Plugins are used it means that it is much better for SEO and can also lead to a lower bounce rate and a faster website.
But even though you get a lot of Plugins provided in the Thesis experience there are still others that we all need to run a successful Thesis fronted blog.
You probably think of it as cheating as so many come with Thesis but compare this to a site without Thesis that will run with 30+ you could easily be talking here about reducing your blog Plugins by about 60%.
We at Weight Loss Bloggers love to make our site as fast and as user friendly as possible because lets be honest who likes a slow website when all you want to do is read an article and get to the next one and if this takes a long time to load then that person has left and you could be down on sales.
Here are our favourite WordPress Plugins that will help your Thesis blog:
All in one SEO: This Plugin will help your SEO campaign from the start. It has loads of options and is very easy to use. You can change so many things in the free version that we have not even tried the paid option yet but if it is as good as the free option then it will not be long.
Add Local Avatar: This is a Plugin we looked around for a long time before we tried this one. It basically gives you your own picture on the author area of your site instead of using the usual WordPress ones that are for everyone.
Contact Form 7: This Plugin gives you a contact form so that people can contact you easily. It really is very easy to use and set up and they have a great support network if you run into any problems.
Google Site map: This Plugin is to make sure you get found in all the major search engines after you have posted an update to your blog. This is important so that it makes sure your content gets indexed as quickly as possible and the search engines know when you have posted.
Kracken: This plugin is one of the best I have used for image re-sizing. We used to use the free one from Yahoo called “WP smush-it”. It just did not do the job correctly and kept crashing so we had to find an alternative and we did. It is paid service but for but $5 a month for 500mb worth of images is a great deal and it works flawlessly.
It’s very important that you use a Plugin like this on your blog because as your blog grows you are hosting more and more images from each of your posts and by re-sizing them you can then free up your blog.
Pinterest Pin It Button: This button is great and works very well. It is free but also has a paid option where you can customise your button and also add the other major social networks and we utilise this because it all works together and people can see your content is worthy of a share.
Here is how it looks on one of our recent posts:
Simple Tags Plugin: This Plugin gives you a tag cloud like the built in WordPress one but this Plugin has more options to be able to customise the colour and size of your tags when they are shown.
It is a very good idea to have a tag cloud on your blog because it encourages sharing on your blog and improves the page visits per user.
Schema Creator: This Plugin adds bits of code to your blog posts so that when the search engines crawl your site for content your content will show up correctly in the search results and have some structure to it.
Very good for turning your Google impressions into clicks through to your website!
WP-Advertise.it: This Plugin is one of the best Adsense Plugins we have come across. It has a host of options about where you want to put your Adsense ads and it is so easy to use. Just copy your ad code from Google and paste it in the top box, then mark where you want it to show up and press save. Then it is done!
Wp-rocket: You will come across many caching Plugins on WordPress. Some are free and some have paid options. We have tried some of them but then I was told about this one and we started using it. It is a paid option but it is so easy to set up and the support is brilliant and the integration with MaxCDN is good as well so my site is flying right now.
What you should look for in a Plugin:
I think the most important thing with WordPress Plugins is you want them to be consistent. You also want them to fit in with your Thesis framework so that your blog is amazing all the time to new and returning visitors.
You do not want Plugins to stop and start working. This is why we have opted for paid options sometimes because when you pay for something you can expect better from your purchase.
These Plugins continue to help us keep this blog running and working very well. We hope these Plugins go some way into making our Thesis blog experience better than it would be without them.
Not got Thesis Yet?
If you have not get Thesis yet then I highly recommend that you do. Because there is not as much code running through Thesis and because it is mobile responsive we have found that it has increased our traffic and our revenue.
For example 3 weeks after we first put My Weight Loss Dream on Thesis we saw our SEO traffic increase by 300%. And we have read many times on blogs of people complaining that they have dropped by 40% in SEO traffic when they have left Thesis.
Plus Thesis allows you to create your dream site and create the dream DIY theme.
