One of the worst things to happen to you online is to lose all your hard work you have done over a number of years. This problem can be caused from a variety of different ways.
For instance you press something on your server and it deletes your site – this is something that I did by accident when I first started my blog. And I am sure I am not alone with this one!
Or it can be a case of installing some new software onto your blog, only to find out it has a virus and just like a computer you want to reset your site to a time in the past.
Then you have some kind of issue with your hosting provider and all of your work has just disappeared from your server. This is also something that can happen frequently and like most technical issues it is often something that we do not think about until something actually goes wrong.
Also there is the dreaded hacker. I have different words for these so called people but I will not put them in print!!!! They hack into your server or hosting areas or any areas that are password protected on your site and delete everything.
It has not happened to us as yet but we have been hacked and had some malware on our sites but we did manage to clean our server and get it right again but it goes to show how vulnerable you actually are as an online business.
I know of two friends online that have had their sites hacked. One of them had their site as it was but all links on the site linked her crafts site to a gambling link and it took her a while to work out how the hack had edited her site before it returned to normal. The other friend woke up one day with just a home page message saying “your website has been hacked” and nothing else. It also took her a while to return it to normal.
We have taken precautions to make sure if anything happens by accident or on purpose we have everything we need in place to just get our blog back up straight away.
Here are a few ways you can also look after your website and make sure you are in control of your weight loss blog:
Your Hosting Company
Firstly always make sure your back-ups can be as often as your hosting company allow. We back up 3 times a week because we update our blog a lot and we do not want to have too much to re-do if something happened as that would be a complete nightmare.
Most hosting companies let you set the back-ups up yourselves and give you plenty of options but I would suggest making this one of the first things you do before you start updating your blog a lot.
We use a site called blogvault. This site is a godsend and is specially made for WordPress hosted sites like our own. They have a “one button option” that will back up your blog at a push of a button; this is what drew us to this and the great support we receive.
It is just so easy to use.
Add a plugin into your WordPress installation activate it and then log in to your Blogvault account and push that button.
There you will see your blog getting backed up every few hours which is great and you can also check to see what your blog would look like if the worst happened.
You also get a 7 day trial so if after 7 days it is not for you then just cancel and you will not be charged.
A few different options are:
All these websites offer a backup service but the price depends on how big your websites are and some even have a 30 day trial so you can really give it a try out and see if it is for you.
Also now you can complete cloud based back ups which is really top of the range stuff! The cloud storage is usually priced around the size of your website and databases and you are paying for space rather than a fixed price per month. It is up to you which ones would best suit you.
If you are the little guy just starting out until you have a lot of content on your weight loss blog then the cost will be relatively low.
Free Back Up
Yes you can free backups for your WordPress website but you will have limited space.
Here are a few options at the moment:
These WordPress plugins do seem to be all the rage at the moment and these two above are free for you to use. How much of the server resources they use I do not know but they are very quick and easy way to back up your website.
No matter which you choose you need to make a priority to get a backup done and usually have 2-3 options just in case something happens.
We all wish we could turn back the clock and wish we had backed up when we didn’t and you need to seriously think about looking after your website. You may never have any problems but you never know and you have to be careful.
