I love Pinterest and I am very grateful for all the wonderful traffic it has sent my way. I average about 9000 daily impressions to my pins and end up with all the pins I have on with more than 1000 visitors a day just from Pinterest.
But there was a flaw in Pinterest’s system and many people have written about it in ebooks recently and it’s caused a spam feast on my feed.
Basically what it suggests is that you create an extra board on your Pinterest account, because whenever someone follows YOU rather than an individual BOARD, what happens is that as a follower you suddenly have the contents of that entire person’s other boards within your feed.
For example I have just logged into Pinterest and discovered among all the diet updates a pin showing me how to clean my makeup brush.
Of course it’s of no interest to me, but just like Twitter we follow someone’s overall activity and then realise a couple of years down the line that it was the wrong decision.
Instead if you want to follow someone follow their board instead.
Of course I have had two years of activity on there and this is a huge clean up operation. But my virtual assistant is very talented and she loves a challenge and this is what she has done:
- She has unfollowed any boards that are in unrelated niches
- She has unfollowed any one that has spammy boards
- She has put together a list of those following and those not, so that we can delete any that are not following us
And we started with a following of about 12,000 and we are now down to just below 9000 and will be at around 5000 when we finish it.
You’re probably wondering why unfollow so many people?
Well the truth is, Pinterest is all about sharing and joining a community, so if they’re not interested in the same things as you, or if they are not following you back then the chances are they wont be sharing your content and they become worthless followings.
Of course this is ongoing and I am sure it will take until the end of the month to finish but it makes it so much easier when you want to share other people’s content, if you can quickly find what you are looking for and get on with it.
Then when I have done this I will have a go at fixing the Weight Loss Bloggers Pinterest account. Though, I am sure that one will be a breeze in comparison with it being a smaller Pinterest account!
