Like many people out there, I love new ways to build my brand and to increase my presence online. That is why helpareporter.com seemed like the perfect fitting for us at both My Weight Loss Dream and Weight Loss Bloggers.
If you are not familiar with Help A Reporter it is:
A place where you could work with other bloggers, news channels and even TV shows that were looking for experts and opinions from people like me and you.
You look at this on paper and it seems like the dream site. Bloggers can get their name out there and be linked in content as experts, just like journalists can then have the research done for their story in a flash.
But in reality it just didn’t work and this is exactly why I quit just 10 days after joining:
Full of lazy bloggers that have found an alternative to writing their own content
There are endless opportunities on there, which are basically low quality bloggers (a lot of their content is really bad quality) and those with low traffic coming through to their sites.
They always seem to have blog posts with “top 10 list” of something or another and it’s like they are just using other bloggers to write the content for them and then they just copy and paste the content into a blog post.
Great if you want to guest post though….
I actually got an article approved in one of these low quality blogs – and the problem there was that with so many people not revealing their names you don’t know where your content is going to be appearing.
The email system doesn’t work properly
The way the site works, is that it delivers emails to you three times a day. This is split into mornings, afternoon and evening. At first they all came through fine, and then it would miss sessions and on a few days I never got any messages at all.
Also because there are so many requests you’ll often spend 2 hours a day, just going through them to see what is suitable and that is without the time taken to answer them.
The day after emails had not come through with queries at all, I had lots of emails bounce back that hadn’t been delivered. Some I was told that it was closed because the deadline had passed (it hadn’t when I sent the emails) and some had the standard postmaster message that the email hadn’t come through at all.
This was really annoying because it was like I had wasted a good 10 hours for nothing.
The email answering system and failed writing copy
Another problem was the emails side of things. I tried signing up and was told my email confirmation message would come through to me. It didn’t. I then requested to join again and again it didn’t. Then I tried it from my personal email and it came through.
They didn’t say at any point during signing up that you can’t use your main business email address, so I had wasted time here and then when I eventually got in, I was just told to answer emails and that would be passed onto the appropriate person.
Well I started answering emails and some of them that I thought would be high level spam I answered my business email and a few others I answered from my private email.
I would post a message stating “here is my expert opinion and please see the attached”. Then I would have worked hard on the attached and on some occasions I would use my nutritionist to ghost write some content for me. Then I would be waiting for a response back.
And in that 10 days I must have sent off about 50 replies to various things that are niche specific to my site.
And then to get nothing back was worrying me.
I then got an email from Help A Reporter about filling in my account properly, I logged on and looked at my dashboard. From looking I soon realised that the only emails that had got through was the ones sent to my personal email address and that any attachments were not getting through.
So when I sent “please see the attached” all of those had never made it to the person and this applied for the majority.
So in other words, out of 50 queries that I answered, only 5 went through. A lousy 10% was getting seen and that was it!!!!
I just couldn’t believe it and was really upset and angry about it.
I got reported
I also got reported by someone that was in my niche, stating that my response was not relevant! This made me super mad and I can’t believe that people can treat you like that on sites like this!
I got spammed
I have never got any spam before to my personal email, but since applying to some jobs I have found that these low quality bloggers (that have your details but you don’t have theirs) are now adding me to their mailing list and messaging me with stupid requests that are not related to what I signed up for.
This place is seriously not for me. It’s full of flaws and needs to seriously look at the kind of people using the place for website content. Of course there are big brands there too but its more low quality than high quality. Serious amount of time needs to be spent on improving how people get in touch with each other and making it a more successful place from the point of view of the blogger.
Though on the plus side it didn’t cost me any fees from Help A Reporter as I was on a free trial. But I still paid out on my time and the costs for my ghost writer. I don’t regret trying it though, as I have always wondered how things like that worked, but its not for me!
